Instead of having to do service.domain.tld it's nice to do service.lan.

My previous experience is with dropbox and onedrive and I tend to limit bandwidth ... I want sync to happen in the background. It's not something I usually consider "high priority" I found NC to be a lot more flexible and complete, specially with all the machine learning options. I also appreciate the privacy and price Hosting about 7TB of data for $10 worth of power a month and a $150 investment that allows me to host many other things. The web interface in my case is a bit slow initially but that's mostly because I opted to route it via pangolin reverse proxy / cloud flare tunnels, but I notice once the redis cache DB loads it's blazing fast. Overall I'm pretty happy with the speed, I'm sharing this with a family of 15 and I haven't heard any complaints yet.

I use Kube everyday for work but I would recomend you to not use it. It's complicated to answer problems you don't care about. How about docker swarm, or podman services ?

Most DNS queries are UDP. I'd do a modified scream test and change old.domain to something like 1.2.3.4. Then run sudo netstat or ss with -tpn, grepping for 1.2.3.4. Or something like grep -r old.domain /etc.

Their will be edge cases this doesn't catch. As some services store said data in a db and grep won't be able to find em. For example Immich stores it's oidc data in db and canr be found this way. Don't ask me how I know.

I somewhat agree on your comment about documentation and UI (altough once you get used to it, it's manageable) but just to add with my experience on these things: for me they've been rock solid. I've used them both at home and professionally (mostly on small-ish networks) for at least 10 years and they just seem to run just fine. Currently my home router is RB4011iGS+ and there's been absolutely no problems with it in the 4-5 years it's been on my network. I'm not saying all their models are as reliable and there's not that many models I've had my hands on, but my experience with them has so far been pretty good.

I think a lot of peope understandably misunderstand this post because it doesn't really explain the situation. After reading OP's comments I gather that OP put a new server online (not on AWS) and was immediately port scanned by a host that is on AWS. Since OP did not consent to being port scanned, they filled out an abuse complaint with AWS, the hoster the scan came from, out of principle, knowing that it probably won't do much. Which is totally fine if that is how you want to spend your time. I think what most commenters thought is that OP was hosting with AWS and complained to them that someone else scanned their server. This does not seem to be the case.

I'm personally looking at setting up whisper or whisperx with bazarr, to get subtitles for movies and series that I can't find any to download.

Nephele with SERVE_LISTINGS turned on and a read only mount. It shows listings in the browser, just like Apache, but can also be accessed with a file browser, because it’s a WebDAV server.

I just right click on the terminal to change the profile to whatever I feel like it should be in the moment (usually red). I do it by reflex, basically. I never felt the need to try to set up automation for different servers, but I expect there's probably a way to do that if you really wanted to.

Definitely easiest and most manual, but not "robust" I guess but its hard for it to fail you're more likely to have user error than system error

All-in, I wanted something on the order of 1MB for client app, server, all dependencies, everything. Okay that's gotta be radically different!

Interesting, waiting on network mounts could be useful! I deploy everything through Komodo so it's handling the initial start of the stack, updates, logs, etc..

I'm still a beginner myself, but from my experience I'd say skip Nextcloud at least to start with. I found even the AIO version confusing to set up. Hell, I still do. I have the NextcloudPi image running on a Pi4 but am actively looking for a replacement because it runs like crap on that hardware and I don't need all of the features it offers/tries to cram into one service. I'm leaning towards FileRun. Yeah, you have to pay for it once. But so far it seems to be the best alternative that doesn't try to do too much. And yes, I tried Owncloud Infinite Scale, before everyone jumps on me

I'm in the same boat. My 2 bay Synology is enough for my storage, but the apps and Docker containers are bringing it to its knees. I'm keeping the Synology and adding on a mini PC to run docker containers. Found a mini PC with an i5-12500T for £240. I'm a noob at this stuff, but I'm hyped to get more stability in what I host and start using more demanding services.
