Hi all!
So, I knew about the "cheat code" for Super Mario Bros. to continue from the world where you died last time. (Hold A on the title screen and START)
The thing is, it doesn't seem to work playing the game through Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo Entertainment System.
If I lose all my extra lifes and die, back on the title screen holding A and pressing start still drops me back to 1-1.
What am I missing? Is it really not working in this version of the game, or I'm the one who can't press 2 buttons?
I'm playing it on the Switch 2 and using an 8bitdo wireless Pro controller (as a wired Pro controller) if it matters...
Thanks!

Edit : also, if I remember correctly that only brings you to the beginning of the world, not specific level. So if you were on 1-4, you're still going to 1-1.

No idea about the cheat code.
One thing you can do is use save states to save your game and then load that when needed.
The way I did was to only make a save when each level started, to give me unlimited continues, but still get the experience of playing the original game. I would also set a threshold of allowing 2-3 deaths (depending on how many lives I have left) before loading the save.
I did cheated on this a couple of times when I got stuck, but that's a separate topic.

I haven't checked with the Joy Cons, but will do later the day, thanks for the input.
Even if that brings you back to the beginning of the world, it's still a big help

I just tried with my 8bitdo (not a pro controller though, SN30 pro). Game over on 3-2, A+start brings me to 3-1.

If it really doesn't work here (which really would be strange), then yeah, that's what I'm gonna use. Using it already.
It would be just nice, to have the "built-in" way of save states of some kind. It's half-way cheating that way, since they put this feature inside the game and not the system you run on it.
And also, as you mentioned it too, using save states also saves the extra life counts. So soon enough, probably there will be a save where I don't have any lifes and every death would mean game over.
Minor things. But yeah. Will try the A + START thing with Joy Cons, and if that won't work either, I just use save states and maybe save at each world.
My smile would be more natural, if I could finish the game (for the first time, from the beginning to the end) the intended way, and I think using A + START is still fine.
