Because they sell themselves as a cute alternative to Google without offering a substantiative difference.

They allow you to search with js off, which means no tracking on their domain. Quite a big difference.
They can't stop tracking on other sites, quite obviously.

I think this comment said it best:

This is an obvious, thinly-veiled advertisement for a company's services. It's widely known that ad companies track you everywhere by many mechanisms. This is why we use ad blockers of all sorts. This has nothing to do with DuckDuckGo, it's merely used as a vehicle to get clicks.

And a supplemental note from the DDG team themselves :

This title is highly misleading, implying that Google tracks DuckDuckGo searches directly, which isn’t true... please change it to be more accurate about Google analytics and other Google trackers on websites you may visit.

Can someone convince me DuckDuckGo isn't the browser equivalent of controlled opposition? I struggle like I do with Firefox to see their behavior any other way.

What would, according to you, be not "controlled opposition"? Using curl to fetch webpages?

By the people who don't want an actually good alternative to Google that would actually threaten them?

Their job is to be mediocre and disappointing.

I don't care who the people are in this evaluation, I am not interested in attacking the motivations or character of people who are involved with DuckDuckGo or Firefox, what I am saying is both clearly act as systems in ways that are entirely in accordance with the behavior of controlled opposition.

I don't even blame most of the people involved, the amount of money and power Google has makes the idea of being the one smaller scrappy competitor and actually having even a remotely fair chance at a basic level patently absurd given how much power and money Google has.

huh? plenty of tracking is still possible without javascript

this is an advertorial with a dishonest/misleading clickbait headline.

of course google has trackers on lots of websites... that is not news, nor does it have anything to do with which non-gooogle search engine one might use to find a website.

this particular google analytics competitor may or may not be more privacy friendly than others but the fact that they are advertising their product with this kind of garbage does not inspire confidence.

Yeah, for some reason I thought that html.duckduckgo.com was free from ads, but when I temporarily disabbled uBlock origin I see that isn't the case.
I didn't mean to insinuate that no js means no tracking, I meant that the only tracking on ddg (clicking ads) was gone. I was wrong on that count.

I use duck duck go mainly, but more and more I'm using yandex. I heard about kagi, the privacy-focused but paid alternative, and what it really comes down to is how much do you want to trust others with your data?

This article made no mention of browser extensions like ublock or privacy badger, the latter being a track-blocker exclusively.

Why not use SearXNG? Hop on a public instance and then not only can they not track you, but nobody can tell who searched for what since the instances don’t keep logs. Best part is, you can still search with any engine you desire while using SearXNG.

I had issues with it in the past, where certain search engines would go down, so often that it was more of a hassle that just using duckduckgo. I remember bing and duckduckgo being engines with the most uptime for me, so I didn't see the point in using it at the time. Which instances work well for you?

I use a selfhosted instance myself. I can send you the link to it, but I obviously don't make any guarantees on reliability.
