In my country the account owner will get 2-6 years of prison for money laundering, so nobody would "lend" or rent that. Unless it's stolen identity, and then if widespread the bank will be responsible for having weak KYC procedures (for example ING bank, with a worldwide revenue of 18 trillion, was banned from getting new customers in the country for around 5 years because they allowed to open online accounts too easily)

You think just because airplane mode is turned on means the phone isnt still functional? WiFi still works in airplane mode. WiFi calling exists, Signal Exists. I dont need to be on my phone for the 20 or so minutes I'll be without connection in the car, and everywhere offers free WiFi. Use a VPN + randomized mac and you might as well be an anonymous anomaly. I also find it dubious at best that in less than 20 years people have completely forgotten you don't have to be reachable at all times. You used to have to share a landline between a family of 5, and you werent always home. Before that, you had to either send a letter or go find that person physically. People can function without having to be contactable 24/7

Our research shows that phone scammers often try to trick people into performing specific actions to initiate a scam, like changing default device security settings or granting elevated permissions to an app. These actions can result in spying, fraud, and other abuse by giving an attacker deeper access to your device and data. To combat phone scammers, we’re working to block specific actions and warn you of these sophisticated attempts. This happens completely on device and is applied only with conversations with non-contacts. Android’s new in-call protections1 provide an additional layer of defense, preventing you from taking risky security actions during a call like: Disabling Google Play Protect, Android’s built-in security protection, that is on by default and continuously scans for malicious app behavior, no matter the download source. Sideloading an app for the first time from a web browser, messaging app or other source – which may not have been vetted for security and privacy by Google. Granting accessibility permissions, which can give a newly downloaded malicious app access to gain control over the user's device and steal sensitive/private data, like banking information. Bruh, if you are falling for simple stuff like a stanger telling you to chance settings over a phone call, you're cooked. No "protection" can save you.

Well I was not really addressing the specific item that spawned this discussion thread, only the notion that was stated that one should only ever use the official stores.

They need to sell more phones somehow (which is why relying on corporate software is never a good idea. We need a real android alternative)

Who remembers the original Neko.exe for Windows 95? I do, and it's still running around on the TV computer in the living room. Neko is the Japanese word for cat, by the way.

This is the work of a company that has lost its way. None of this is substantive, worth an article, or worth the work itself.

Yeah, i installed it before commenting. I do like that i can set favorites and it also keeps history—that's handy. I just can't ever remember the names of apps i don't use often. lol It seems good so far, though very different from Fossify Launcher. But I'll keep playing with it for now, certainly! I might try the tags...

The thing is, this change isn't new, it's been coming for a while (as in years, it started with at least Android 13). Though it's weird, some apps still get full access, such as Resilio Sync, though other similar apps such as Nextcloud and Syncthing don't. I recently setup a phone and when installing Resilio it asked for permissions to the entire SD card, so clearly there's still a mechanism, but only some apps are permitted to ask for it. Something fishy going on.
