Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don’t question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don’t post uncontextualized images or videos, and don’t start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don’t show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

No. Putin very much formed the 21st century Russian state and broke with Jeltsin's doctrine. Putin is not a symptom he is the disease. And yes, now there'll be a guy to replace him but that guy is also his doing.

EU leaders and Western governments are afraid of cutting Israel off from SWIFT, but financial pressure doesn’t destroy relationships permanently — it forces negotiations, and business always finds its way back once terms improve. They fear suspending the EU-Israel Association Agreement, worried they’ll lose valuable tech partnerships. But Israeli companies still want and need access to the European market — the EU is Israel’s largest trading partner, especially for high-tech exports. Even if Israel looks to other countries, that market cannot easily be replaced. Trade will resume — just with better political leverage. They avoid defense and tech embargoes, concerned about losing defense contracts and strategic influence over Israel’s security policies. But defense is a seller’s market, and Israel would return to the table once economic pressure starts to bite. In the meantime, Europe could strengthen its own defense and technology industries instead of relying on external partnerships. They’re scared of diplomatic isolation, thinking it means losing all influence over Israel’s decisions and future cooperation. But political isolation sends the clearest possible message on the global stage. It doesn’t end relationships forever — it forces accountability before Israel permanently pivots toward powers like China or Russia. In the end, Western governments are paralyzed by fears of temporary consequences, while doing nothing guarantees the current reality continues unchecked.

"The far-right party AfD and some conservatives have partly succeeded in making anti-Semitism an issue for others," he said. "When you blur the line between criticism of Israel and anti-Semitism, you avoid talking about far-right anti-Semitism, which is, in my opinion, the crux of the problem, if one believes the incidents reported by the Central Council of Jews in Germany." He acknowledged the existence of anti-Semitism in certain Muslim circles in Germany, "but no one dares to talk about it for fear of being instrumentalized." The polarization is such that the conflict in Israel is "actually a projection of the question of immigrant integration." This raises a key aspect of the insanity of it. pro-Israeli lobby groups have been pushing this narrative of "imported antisemitism" together with the far right. Netanyahu recently invited many Fascists from Europe and the German AfD is one of the loudest supporter for Israel in Germany with the other parties often following the AfD. This mounted to two recent resolutions to "combat antisemitism" by the federal parliament that was jointly passed by AfD, CDU/CSU, SPD, FDP and Greens. The first resolution gave an example of "Antisemitism" in the Berlinale 2024 where the Israeli and Palestinian Directors of the documentary "No other Land" criticised Israel as an Apartheid regime. The resolution however did not mention the terror attack in Halle where a German neonazi tried to storm a synagogue and murder Jews. Instead the nazi went to a nearby kebab place and murdered two people after he failed to enter the synagogue. This example shows that Jews and Muslims are interchangeable as opportunistic targets of nazi terror. The AfD fascists are instrumentalizing the alleged fight against Antisemitism for racist and authoritarian policies while also sporting the main source of Antisemitism in Germany in the shape of neonazis. Most of the other parties in parliament play this game instead of challenging it and pro-Israeli lobby groups are joining in on it. At the end of this everybody looses including Jewish Germans and other Jewish people living in Germany. Maybe. I have no clue about this stuff and heard his name for the first time last week when he was elected. Let's see what happens ... Addition: Pope Leo XIV calls for peace in Ukraine and Gaza in symbolically rich blessing on Mother’s Day “I, too, address the world’s great powers by repeating the ever-present call ‘never again war,’” Leo [said] ... Leo quoted Pope Francis in denouncing the number of conflicts ravaging the globe today, saying it was a “third world war in pieces.” “I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people,” he said. “Let everything possible be done to achieve genuine, just and lasting peace as soon as possible.” There are also reports that Pope Leo, in first known call with foreign leader, speaks to Ukraine's Zelenskiy

Mainly intentional disinformation about russia's war in Ukraine and intentional disinformation regarding immigration. People think because there are more darker skinned people arround it's the reason their life is getting worse. (While actually it's increased inequality) TL,DR: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.

A fun bit that I learned yesterday: In 2012, Dobrindt actually advocated outlawing Die Linke as a party. It's so weird how the strategy shifts in the face of actual fascists trying to take over compared to there being a leftist democratic party that is not actually doing all that well.
