Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don’t question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don’t post uncontextualized images or videos, and don’t start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

  • on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons)
  • on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
  • on Hungary: Euronews

Unless they’re the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any “thinktank” type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don’t link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don’t show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @[email protected]

Sorry for the misunderstanding. If it is either USA or China, and the USA is retreating and China is celebrating, what else do you mean?

Seems like they forgot to take an important lesson of FDI's success in China - take shared control of the new assets. Neoliberal indoctrination would do that to you.

Not having essential parts basically works like a kill switch, so we're screwed either way. If EU governments do similar purchases now they would be real stupid.

Do not let this happen. Fight it with everything you have. The US is an example of what happens when those extremist ideas in the heritage foundation are actually put into practice. I repeat, fuck the heritage foundation, and if you're in Europe, fight like hell to keep that shit from taking hold.

I hate that this has to be explicitly stated and isn't a given.

Not forgetting that it's India. Just saying that Trump is making the US more like India (again).

Much of it seems to be regular upkeep of existing facilities. They're the 3rd largest pharma company in the world, so they have a sizeable presence almost everywhere already. This seems just like PR for things that have likely been planned long before now. From Roche's Press Release: As part of this investment, Roche will increase its existing footprint of more than 25,000 employees in 24 sites across eight US states. The investment will include: -Expanded and upgraded US manufacturing and distribution capabilities for its innovative medicines and diagnostics portfolio in Kentucky, Indiana, New Jersey, Oregon and California -A state-of-the-art gene therapy manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania -A new 900,000 square foot manufacturing centre to support Roche’s expanding portfolio of next generation weight loss medicines (location to be announced) -A new manufacturing facility for continuous glucose monitoring in Indiana -A new R&D centre in Massachusetts, conducting cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) research and serving as hub for our new cardiovascular, renal and metabolism research and development efforts -Significant expansion and upgrading of our existing pharmaceuticals and diagnostics R&D centres in Arizona, Indiana and California Roche is a Swiss company with a strong heritage in more than 130 countries globally. We are proud of our 110 year legacy in the United States.

Well... you can do it as an older person as well, but you can't stay in official youth hostels and the private hostels that will allow you to stay have in recent years turned into some fancy "glampacking" party locations that are both relatively expensive and most older person will not like it at all. The laid back slightly grubby hostel of my youth that made interrailing affordable and where it really didn't matter what age you were seems to have become a very rare thing.

Are mods Jews themselves? If you want to say Zionists then say Zionists, do not legitimise the equivalence of Zionism with being Jewish. There are two kinds of people who do that, Zionists and Nazis, and you don't wanna be either.

If you have a self-consistent human rights framework all rights support and in some way encompass all other rights. I love how the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union frames if, by starting with with "Human dignity is inviolable. It must be respected and protected" as the foundation that is so fundamental it's just recognised and not "given".

The current mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner (CDU) won the repeated election for the state (the mayor is the head of the city-state government). He won it after demanding police should release the first names of juvenile suspects so that people could form an opinion on whether they are "real Germans" or "merely German citizens". Franziska Giffey (SPD) who lead the former government coalition from the Social Democrats, Greens and Left party, decided to throw away a majority to continue the progressive coalition in favor of becoming junior partner under Kai Wegner and the CDU. The state of Berlin is governed by a coalition of racist nationalists and people who prefer helping racists nationalists rather than continue a progressive coalition. The increase in far right hate crime in Berlin was predictable and is in line with the political affiliation of the state government. It is consistent with the state government reversing progressive policies such as making more parts of the city walkable, more public transport and a green transition. It is consistent with the state government cracking down on academic freedom, cultural freedom, freedom of assembly, social institutions helping marginalized and disadvantaged groups... The multicultural Berlin is to be reshaped into a cosmopolitan facade for an otherwise authoritarian, racist and antisocial society. Whether people are "worthy" of living in Berlin will be determined more and more by the money in their bank account and the color of their skin.

We aren't implementing because it doesn't work, but because the mindset of many people is that those eho don't work deserve no money. Except if they're already rich.
