News and information from Europe 🇪🇺

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don’t overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don’t post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don’t troll nor incite hatred. Don’t look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia’s List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don’t question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add “/s” when you’re being sarcastic (and don’t use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don’t evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don’t post uncontextualized images or videos, and don’t start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

  • on any topic: Al Mayadeen, brusselssignal:eu, citjourno:com, europesays:com, Breitbart, Daily Caller, Fox, GB News, geo-trends:eu, news-pravda:com, OAN, RT, sociable:co, any AI slop sites (when in doubt please look for a credible imprint/about page), change:org (for privacy reasons)
  • on Middle-East topics: Al Jazeera
  • on Hungary: Euronews

Unless they’re the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any “thinktank” type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don’t link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don’t show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @[email protected]

This seems like a good context to plug Munecat's excellent comparative video about Sovereign Citizen movements in various countries: https://youtube.com/watch?v=KcxZFmKrxR8

They had to tap the DPRK to sustain their meatwaves. Seriously, think about it: Russia was - and is - having such extreme and pervasive manpower issues that they had to call in THE pariah state and convince them to send tens of thousands of dudes. Sure, there’s the whole NK gets combat experience” thing… but most of the accounts I’ve read and seen indicate that NK forces not only faced catastrophic losses due to how they were used, but also overt and extensive discrimination and abuse by regular Russian forces (shocker, I know). Any serious strategist thinks Russia isn’t very close to its breaking point should probably not be considered a serious strategist. In the longer term sense, Russia’s already crippled their demographic and economic prospects for probably the next half century at least.

In most places with declining democracy all of the major parties are neoliberals pretending to be either conservatives or liberal left. When conservatives vote for right promising them to bring back the jobs they are deceived the same way as liberals voting for centrists promising wealth for everyone who tries. Neither delivers on their promise so which side is really achieving anything? Maybe both are beating a drum to a war that benefits only the wealthy?

I thin[k] that's just what we call "spinner" and does not represent the party line. No, it's not just random "idiots." Someone just submitted this to !dach: https://www.t-online.de/id_100620746/ (German). The article makes it clear that there are near-direct personal lines between pro-Nord Stream law firms and Merz. Merz himself is a former lobbyist for BASF, which used to be heavily involved in importing Russian gas through its Wintershall subsidiary. In addition, corruption will be front and center in the new German government. Merz is a former lobbyist; the projected new minister of agriculture, Felßner, is an agricultural lobbyist; the projected new president of Bundestag, Klöckner, is known for being overly friendly with Nestlé; Spahn is known for having sunk billions into FFP mask deals that included networks close to CxU; Dobrindt started the toll project that was non-compliant with EU regulation and sunk hundreds of millions [...] A bunch of power-hungry asshats that played obstructionist opposition for 3 years, so they could come into power and direct positive cashflows into their own pockets and ruin trust in democratic systems at the same time. uncapping safety spending over an amount where reaching anyways is a very fucking strong signal That money and the weapons it buys can be used against anyone, not just Putin. It might just be another vehicle for corruption. not to the degree that it immediately threatens our democracy They're always moving the line a little bit, finding out what they can do.

Appreciate your wholesome message. But felt obliged to write down this cynical response: Eh, nah. We’re a nation that oppresses most minorities, downplays our atrocities committed in the past, and elects neo-nazis. For what it’s worth, I’m not on board with statism in the first place.

Chinese investments are seemingly welcome by the Spanish government, but many in Spain criticize Pedro Sánchez's government for the stance. Of the current dictatorships, the one in Beijing has killed the most people: The crimes of the communist dictatorship of China, which is praised by [Spanish PM] Pedro Sánchez Spanish socialism criticizes Franco's dictatorship ... In December, Sánchez announced more than 100 events to celebrate that anniversary. In his presentation of these events, the socialist leader stated that with Franco's death, Spain went from "being a dictatorship, poor and isolated, to one of the most complete democracies in the world" [...] ... but it has friendly relations with the communist dictatorship of China Last year, the PSOE (Sánchez's party) held a cordial meeting with representatives of the Communist Party of China (CPC), that is, the sole party of the largest dictatorship in the world, directed from Beijing and which has governed mainland China for 76 years without free elections, systematically violating human rights and committing the largest genocides perpetrated by the movement communist, with up to 82 million deaths during Mao's bloody rule. Of all current dictatorships, Beijing's is the one that has killed the most people, by far

Employers can fire easily, which make it easier for companies to hire for expansion, but also fire if the expansion fails. This is good. It makes a lot of sense that the financial welfare of people should be offloaded off the backs of employers (who need to be dynamic), and onto the state.
