Welcome to the largest gaming community on Lemmy! Discussion for all kinds of games. Video games, tabletop games, card games etc.

Rules

1. Submissions have to be related to games

Video games, tabletop, or otherwise. Posts not related to games will be deleted. This community is focused on games, of all kinds. Any news item or discussion should be related to gaming in some way.

2. No bigotry or harassment, be civil

No bigotry, hardline stance. Try not to get too heated when entering into a discussion or debate. We are here to talk and discuss about one of our passions, not fight or be exposed to hate. Posts or responses that are hateful will be deleted to keep the atmosphere good. If repeatedly violated, not only will the comment be deleted but a ban will be handed out as well. We judge each case individually.

3. No excessive self-promotion

Try to keep it to 10% self-promotion / 90% other stuff in your post history. This is to prevent people from posting for the sole purpose of promoting their own website or social media account.

4. Stay on-topic; no memes, funny videos, giveaways, reposts, or low-effort posts

This community is mostly for discussion and news. Remember to search for the thing you’re submitting before posting to see if it’s already been posted. We want to keep the quality of posts high. Therefore, memes, funny videos, low-effort posts and reposts are not allowed. We prohibit giveaways because we cannot be sure that the person holding the giveaway will actually do what they promise.

5. Mark Spoilers and NSFW

Make sure to mark your stuff or it may be removed. No one wants to be spoiled. Therefore, always mark spoilers. Similarly mark NSFW, in case anyone is browsing in a public space or at work.

6. No linking to piracy

Don’t share it here, there are other places to find it. Discussion of piracy is fine. We don’t want us moderators or the admins of lemmy.world to get in trouble for linking to piracy. Therefore, any link to piracy will be removed. Discussion of it is of course allowed.

I know your comment is ~1 month old but - I'm actually surprised you got downvoted for this comment, because you are right. Steam Deck got released around 2022-2023 and from research, it struggles a bit to play newer games well. I have been debating to get a Steam Deck OLED but that's one of the reasons why, I'm uncertain to purchase one (and hoping for Steam Deck 2). Steam Deck is great for indie-games and emulation though. Was also eyeing the Switch 2 but the prices are ridiculous and thus will wait until price drops or until it's hackable.

It could also be a strategy to then lobby and make everyone else give up their stores, levelling the playing field.

Tbh I never really had trouble with which was which, despite their ridiculous naming conventions. And like the console is decent and they do a lot of things right. But also unless I’m just paying them a monthly fee for gamepass to get access to games that are also on other consoles then there’s no real particular benefit to the console aside from what backwards compatibility it offers. Which is okay but not nearly full BC coverage. And at this point with all the studios they’ve gutted, what more would a new console even bring to the table? An $800 price tag maybe.

Gog, it has cloud saves there. Also I should have written a script to copy the save files every twenty minutes or so in the background. Would have saved me after the crash I guess...

Sure but that’s a crpg whereas Clair is a jrpg (well more of a hybrid but mostly jrpg). FF historically leans towards Clair over baldurs gate

I might be the only one who likes the new Xbox update, but I like the quick access to the game hub as I use it quite often.

This is a couple days delayed response, apologies for that I've been pretty busy. With the rise of game streaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming and Amazon Luna I predict that the console market is basically over. I honestly don't expect Microsoft to release another console and if Sony does it's almost certain to be the last. Nintendo may stick with it longer since they just released the Switch2 but they seem to be prepping for it with the digital key thing. It sucks for the players but it makes fiscal sense for the Publishers and Console Makers (Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo) if there is an industry wide pivot to game streaming where players are required to pay every month. I know that some games don't lend themselves well to this, yet, but it's blatantly obvious (at least to me) that this is where the industry is headed. We've already reached the end of "Console Exclusive" games and I think what comes next is "Streaming Platform Exclusive" games. I think what comes after that is the Publishers establishing their own Streaming Platforms for their own games. This is precisely what has happened with the rest of the entertainment industry and there's no reason I can see for gaming, which is a subset of that same industry, to do anything else now that the streaming technology exists. Steam and GOG will end up pushed out of the market or they will also become Streaming Platforms, just ones that cater to a different set of players.

Yeah, it kind of what it was in the beginning, wasn't it? I remember telling people that it was just like Netflix for games, both in the positive and in the negative sense. And Netflix was still viewed more positively at that point.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm specifically looking for a text guide that outlines the tech progression - doesn't have to be in-depth, just a rough "first get this kind of thing, then this one". These kinds of games tend to be a bit opaque for me, having such a guide would allow me to read up on things when I can't progress myself. Do you happen to know one?

Dune 2000 was amazing, but this is pretty good too. I was ready to hate it, but a friend convinced me to try it with them and its been immensely fun so far.

Also, under US law, ignorance is not a defense in both civil and criminal court. It does not matter if you did not know it was illegal, it does not matter if you did not know it was happening, if you provide an avenue and forum for illegal activity you are culpable at minimum. The corporate shield will prevent any criminal charges against individuals, unfortunately, but the civil liability is pretty evident. It occurred on their platform which means that they did not take sufficient steps to prevent or discourage the practice in the first place. It should not have been a thing that was present to report or react to in the first place. It falls into the same vein as doing background checks and personality evaluations on prospective teachers and daycare workers. Doing 0 checks to validate that these people are not a danger and then claiming ignorance when they touch children in the broom closet is a nonstarter too.

Ah that clarifies a lot actually. I do miss the days where I'd go to a store and buy a physical copy of a game. Then again, they do end up taking up (physical) space of course.

Really? I've only played Kingmaker but while uneven I thought they had some good ones. I really liked both Jubilost and Nok-Nok, I thought Harrim was a pretty interesting character and Jae'thal was enjoyable too.
