Linux

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

That is what xrandr allows you to do on X11, create and set display modes that aren't reported by the monitor. EDID editing is basically replacing the data reported by the monitor, which also allows you to add display modes it doesn't report itself. This is the only way to do what you are looking for on wayland. You can either switch to X11, and use xrandr, or create and EDID file with the display mode you want, and have it load on boot.

What does this have to do with linux? You can run that stuff on FreeBSD and go take out your misplaced frustrations on their forum just as well...

You dont need to wipe anything, just shrink the filesystem from a live system. Then create a new partition, which you encrypt and mount...

Not any moreso than learning any other OS. I'd just argue that it's the case if you're averse to research, reading, listening, watching, or just generally learning from others... or if you're delving into unknown territory Personally, i'm a learn-by-doing type of lady, so I've fucked up my share of devices (I'm allergic to reading unless it's fiction), but I have yet to mess around in the kernel (it's on my todo list, for my LFS build which is TBD)

Not quite the same but you might like the Linux from Nothing series, building out a Linux install from first principles. Obviously lots of linux youtubers have done videos on linux from scratch too but the step by step nature is pretty enjoyable to watch.

except one time when I knocked a cup of water into one in 2005. This but repeatedly for some people. I only drink from my metal bottles, and turn away from my computer. Admittedly I could be more careful by moving away from the computer but now its been years since it happened.

While I'm morally in the opnsense camp I know pfsense has more third party packages available. Running docker in an lxc sounds interesting, I'm a bit old school and enjoy the isolation that a true vm gives you.

This is not correct. If you compile GPL licensed code and distribute the binaries, you are still obligated to make that source available under the same license, with your changes. In the case of GPL, but not all open source licenses, this even applies if you link to (compile with) the GPL code from your own. The MIT license on the other hand, comes with almost no obligations. What RedHat and others do is add support, services, and their own proprietary programs on top of the open source. The open source parts of that distro is and always will be free as in both beer and speech. The non-free packages are often distributed via separate repositories to make the distinction clear. That is just one way to fund open source software and is sometimes referred to as the RedHat model. What OP is asking about is the donation model to fund software. You're not required to donate, but if you enjoy the software and you can afford it, then there is your opportunity to give back. As someone else pointed out, hosting and bandwidth isn't free, so it's important for these projects to find some revenue stream to pay for that.

Oh I figured it out and it's definitely newbie stuff. I was poking around and for shits tried to upgrade my OS. While I couldn't do that, it seems like it did upgrade a lot of other stuff and now the clicker works normally. I was hoping it'd be a miracle and fix another issue, too, but it didn't.
