World News

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

Apart from the point that I'm not an American, I consider the issues you raised as part of "marketablility" -- if it is so unsafe that it is illegal here, you can't bring it on the market. But it also includes issues like American cars simply being to big for European roads (I recently had an issue with a US brand pickup truck driver noticing that the car is too big for the city's underground car park. As he was in the queue in front of me, it took a while to sort this mess out). That we Europeans have to stick closer together is something I preach for decades now, If Trumps tantrums finally helps some European politicians to see the light, so be it. And if this leads to taking down American market dominance at the same time, I'm not going to cry a river.

My family is from there, people are chanting death to Arabs, the fucking president is giving them the thumbs up, the fucking president is literally talking about rounding up the fucking people I love and putting them in internment camps (and I'm probably not far behind) and I've spent the past 30 fucking years watching my people get murdered on the daily and you want to come i here and pretend to care about Arabs while being the biggest hostile piece of shit Karen you could possibly be, telling me I'm racist for fucking seeing shit for what it is. Have fun with your pansy white bullshit.

Judging by the amount it is already in the High Court so doesn't need escalating, it can go straight to enforcement. However if the judgement is made against him personally and the assets belong to a limited company, it will be very difficult to enforce. This is not to say he doesn't have personal assets over there. Also, monies can be recovered directly from his bank account (a separate court order will be needed for that).

As the video suggests, it's an impending problem in many places in the world, US and UK included. And the bitter truth is that we could have avoided this, if not for the insatiable greed of the 1% If the wealth earned from economic growth was spread fairly, we could all be working half the hours we do now, with all the time for socialising and family we could want. And the real irony is that when people have more free time, they will spend their time and money on the culturally enriching things that the government is otherwise being forced to try and subsidise and give grants to keep afloat. Visit historical sites. See a play, pick up a creative hobby, eat out at independent small restaurants. But instead we are working longer and longer hours for less, leaving us with no time for anything, and that sends all out surplus money into the exact industries that are exploiting us. 11PM depression impulse buys from online megacorps, and food delivery through gig economy apps where the delivery person gets next to nothing and the app reaps tbr rewards. It's inevitable that at some point, it's going to collapse.

Yeah, that Vivek case was a highlight, wasn't it. Having that racist nutball come on his show and tell him she'd never vote for him because of colour was nuts.

They're starting to adapt. They often claim, that DEI is an Orwellian term and is not really meaning what it means, that since discrimination is already illegal, such programs are not needed, we just need to "push harder on meritocracy" (which is funny once you realize where the term "meritocracy" comes from), or that these programs have "gone too far", because they watched too much Brian Lunduke or some other people like him, who "overreport" the (supposed) overreaches of DEI programs. "Overreporting" means that you purposefully overinflate supposed problems by bringing up the same story over and over again, which makes the problems seem way bigger than what they actually are, and at worst the people reading or watching half attended might actually think the problem occured another time. I'm from Hungary, and not only this method made people believe that "Roma crimes" and "disability benefit cheats" were way more widespread than they actually were, ultimately handing over the first landside victory to Fidesz (ironically, many of the sites doing these kinds of tactics claimed Viktor Orbán was both too far-left and Roma - Hungary has its own birther movement that makes critique of Fidesz extremely hard), and making the life harder for those groups much harder once Fidesz enacted its programs. Also thanks to overreporting, some of my relatives thought the knife attacker of Blaha Lujza square made yearly attacks for MP3 players up until MP3 players fell out of fashion in favor of smartphones, with some still warning me against bringing an MP3 player to Budapest, because the far-right "news" site kuruc info likes to post the anniversaries of said tragedies caused by Roma criminals, which was even worse in the very first years after the attack (TL;DR: They brought it up on a yearly basis).
