World News

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

The original post reads, "Germany Turns to U.S. Playbook: Deportations Target Gaza War Protesters." This statement is inaccurate; it represents a misleading portrayal. Many participants in this thread seem unconcerned about whether the statement is true or merely aligns with their perception of the situation. I don’t see why I should continue engaging with the post if it solely serves as an echo chamber for a predetermined opinion.

There are ways to be part of the Single Market and all that goes with it without becoming an EU member, for example by becoming a member of the EEA like Norway. They would be able to keep the Pound that way, as well as a number of other things such as controlling the fishing rights in their own waters. They would however have to accept Freedom Of Movement, which was one of the main arguments for Leave during a Referendum which was very much a mix of racism and fantastical expectations of keeping most of the rights even after leaving the EU (Britain has major problems with widespread nationalistic delusions of grandeurs, so lots of people believed all the fantasies about "they will give us all we want")

Nah, it's good. When you have to deal with insane assholes, especially narcissists, you just talk with a calm voice, while ignoring them and doing whatever you want. They can't process it because they can only see drama and you get what you want before they figure it out.

Finnish happiness is derived from actively not being under the control of that certain fully crazy empire to the east, and enjoying every minute of it. Every new day of independence from the Russian Empire is one more chance for Finland to say to their neighbours, "Nananana nana, hahahaha haha."

A billion dollars in fines might make twitter unprofitable. In a regular company, that would coerce the owners to make changes. But Musk doesn't own twitter because he wants to make money off of it, at least not directly. What Musk uses it for is control. A billion dollars a year in fines will be worth it to him, as long as it gives him more control.

3 comments: according to those headlines, above, in the condensed-version of the story, what the Zionists are doing to the entire Palestinian population is somehow "not" execution? & yes, I know that Islamists & Zionists are now competing to represent ideological-rabies through butchery-of-others, but the Zionists definitely are winning, according to rather alot of evidences, including the most-successful extermination-campaign against journalists waged since Hitler/Stalin.. https://euromedmonitor.org/en/article/6669/Euro-Med-Monitor:-Israel’s-brutality-in-Gaza-surpasses-all-recent-forms-of-terrorism I've seen reports that China used executions to convert unwanted minorities into profitable body-parts.. China simply doesn't provide reliable statistics, and they apparently had an actual quota system for executions ( like 10k/y, to feed the medical-tourism industry, a few years ago, was what reports were saying ) We've all seen video, by now, of US police executing people in "self defense", like a man explaining that his ID is in his back pocket, then being told to get it, then being shot 4 times for doing-so.. with his girlfriend beside him, & her small child, too.. Do those executions count in these statistics? Apparently not.. Only formal executions count? I don't accept that only "formal" executions really are executions. _ /\ _

Think of it like this: They were never taught empathy, or to care for others. Just for what they want and power. Nothing else Best thing we can do is get more people onto better platforms/apps/websites. Taking action, & working together consistently more in-person & online. The island has zero huamns, there are no exports of any kind, nor any imports. From or to anyone. Australia had 0% tariffs with USA (under the Aus-USA Free Trade Agreement) but still got hit with a 10% tariff, again the tariff rate was and still is 0%, but we still got 10%. It's straight forward hitting everyone with a tariff, except his master Putin and Putin's boyfriend Kim.

“The US threat to escalate tariffs on China is a mistake on top of a mistake,” The threat “once again exposes the blackmailing nature of the US,” “China will never accept it. If the US insists on its own way, China will fight to the end.” I don't speak Chinese and I've never lived in China, but I get the impression that official statements in Chinese culture (language?) tend to be very measured and diplomatic. This time they are not mincing words. Fight to the end? They are calling the Americans' bluff.

Fair point. I don't actually think US will act in good faith. While there are a lot of sane Americans, IMO they lack gumption and risk-tolerance to address corruption and degeneracy in their society. I genuinely hope I am seriously wrong on this, but we'll see.
