World News

A community for discussing events around the World

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think “Is this fair use?”, it probably isn’t. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to “Mom! He’s bugging me!” and “I’m not touching you!” Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn’t USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you’re posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

So, once the US has ditched NATO to partner with Putin, Orban, Millei, etc.. WILL THE REMAINDER OF NATO SMARTEN-UP AND GET READY FOR THE BEING-RAMPAGED THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE SUBJECTED-TO by Putin+Trump+Orban+GlobalRightWing?? XOR are we going to sit on our hands waiting, denying right to our country's deaths, resonsibility for our own survival?? Humankind may-well deserve extinguishing, if humankind won't do what it needs to do, to survive.. Orban needs to be removed from the EU, and from TrueNATO. Yesterday. This has been true since it became obvious that he was Putin's agent/representative, a few years ago. _ /\ _

There is a dead-simple concept that humankind has been ignoring. The SPEED of climate-change is following a curve similar to a bell-curve: it was at zero. it will, in the end, in the new climate-equilibrium, be zero. Between, however, it will accelerate until it reaches a peak-speed, & then slow-down to the new climate-equilibrium. Obviously, we're still in the accelerating-part of the curve. Obviously, if the past accelerating-curve is matched by future decelerating-towards-zero duration, then the total planetary-heating we're in-for is MUCH more than what "consensus" "science" asserted. Equally obviously, it'll accelerate faster & faster until it reaches its peak-acceleration, & then it'll slow in acceleration until the peak-speed-of-change is reached, remain there for awhile before beginning deceleration.. This simple, basic concept, that the general shape of a ClimatePunctuation is roughly bell-curved for speed, should identify the minimum-magnitude of change, for all.. So should the powerlaw underlying the change, which shows that for the current CO2 we're aiming at a minimum of +6C, but when methane is included, then we're aiming into a minimum of +9C. No, MSM isn't going to be either honest or proactive, so just expect more incredulity, more normalization-of-disinformation, more "the evidence contradicts the valid-model" "science", & more .. essentially, filibustering to prevent any competent mitigation. The bell-curve-shape of the speed-of-change & the powerlaw underlying the planetary-equilibrium-temperature are both profound, don't care who says what, & work. They're trustworthy.. The disinformation-pushers, however, profit in social-status from what they're doing, so that'll continue, until the very end. Here's the powerlaw without including methane: https://www.nature.com/articles/nature19798 When I added-in the methane, & the proper timescale for adding it in is 12y, apparently ( presume that we'll keep adding more & more of it, too, as that's what the evidence declares ), which makes it much more significant than I'd thought.. ( methane has a short halflife in the atmosphere, so the longer you measure a particular input's effect, the weaker it gets. That means, though, that the ever-increasing amount we're measuring in our atmosphere is directly due to ever-increasing amount of methane-release, not to accumulation-of-previous-releases. ) _ /\ _

Someone pointed-out to me that when the police declare the value of siezed-drugs, it is significantly to their political advantage to misrepresent the value as being MUCH higher than it actually was.. Therefore I'd legislate, to prevent that corruption from having any home, that police could identify the mass, & the grade, of whatever they'd seized, but not the "value", so as to make it so that they didn't even have any motivation to lie ( thereby saving them from some bad karma ).. However, this valuation looks backwards? ( mind you, I've no actual idea how much the stuff is worth, on the streets ) $132_000_000 / 2_400_000g = $55/g that doesn't seem right, if it's uncut? ( ttbomk, it's nearly-impossible to get clean drugs at the end-purchase: they're ALWAYS cut with SOMETHING.. I remember some years ago, the police were warning people out on the West coast of North America, that there was some .. perhaps cocaine? .. going around that was killing people because it wasn't cut, so everybody was getting the dosage wrong.. ) Anyways, this is just a public service announcement to say that EVERY time you see such a statement by police, a mass of drugs, for some specific "value", please do the calculation yourself, & see if what they're saying even makes any sense.. In this case I think they were undervaluing the stuff, but that's just a guess ( as I've no actual idea what drugs go-for, to the end-user, or at any stage of the chain, actually ), & maybe my impression that cocaine was a $100/g drug is just some impression I got from 1980's movies? Entirely possible.. _ /\ _

Putting a Fatwa on the guy in command of the B2s seems unwise, I have no doubt the USA could kill him if they wanted.

But the SBU had followed the pair and had special equipment on hand, the operative said, expecting another attack after the previous blast. “We had certain technical means to block the signals to the telephone,” said the source. When Alexander rang the phones strapped to the bombs to detonate them, the calls did not go through. That was thoughtful of them.

Haha, yeah, and I think our beef also doesn't qualify for import in Europe if I recall correctly.

Even though Winter War was really embarrassing for Soviet Union, they did defeat Finland in that and in Continuation War

where have I heard this before? *cough* Atomic waste * They have started to relocate hundreds of thousands of barrels containing nuclear waste from nuclear plants somewhere at 3 km depth in the Atlantic to check their containment integrity. I guess more and more surprises will turn up, as a result of our past dumping solutions. I believe they have also dumped some, in or near the area of an ancient primal forrest in Poland But you are right. How will we contain all this waste?
