US President Donald Trump himself is the chairman of a task force he founded that focuses on the preparation for the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will be played in the United States and neighboring Canada and Mexico.

It is precisely with those neighboring countries that the Trump administration is now in conflict, because the Republican wants to introduce all kinds of trade tariffs. But in that, the American president, who signed a decree Friday night to help the task force get started, sees no problems. "Tension is a good thing, it only makes things better," he said during a press moment.

The task force must set up the safety and planning of the tournament. Millions of visitors are expected to attend the tournament. The 2026 World Cup will have 48 participants for the first time, who will play a total of 104 matches. The final will be held in New Jersey on July 19.

Trump spoke in Washington with FIFA president Gianni Infantino. "It is a great honour for our country to host this tournament," said the 78-year-old president.

Infantino spoke entirely in Trump's style about the next World Cup. "We are here to host the best show on this planet ever," he said. According to Infantino, the task force should ensure that visitors "feel safe, feel happy and feel that we are doing something special."

Three Super Bowls every day for a month

The FIFA boss estimated the economic impact of both the World Cup in 2026 and the World Cup for clubs that will be played as a preview in 2025 at 40 billion dollars (about 37 billion euros). "We will create 200,000 jobs for these two World Cups," Infantino calculated. To the Americans, who are not so much football fans as fans of American football, he said: "We have ten million tickets for sale. That's three Super Bowls every day for a month."

Trump received from Infantino the trophy that can be won at the World Cup for clubs next summer. The American president then took the FIFA boss to a summit on cryptocurrencies in the White House, to show the trophy there.

The 2026 World Cup is not the only major sports tournament to take place in Trump's last presidential term. In 2028, Los Angeles hosted the Summer Olympics. It was the first U.S. Games since the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

This isn't directly about Europe, but I still posted it here as the World Cup is obviously a huge event in many European countries (I understand if it's removed, though).

With the World Cup likely becoming a Trump-fest (with fucking 'mid-time shows' or whatever they're called), this'll probably the second time I'll not be watching, after Qatar. And then there's the 2034 one in fucking Saudi Arabia. They really want to rub your face in it that the only thing that matters is money.

I wouldn't even be surprised - so long as they can outbid whatever some other rich dictatorship is willing to offer, it's theirs. Though, Putin may well not live to see it, being 72 (poor thing).
