Academia does seem a bit small for my field, and being an experienced professor probably would have helped compared to barely finishing PhD. I consider my skills flexible enough to work in a variety of industries, but to qualify for the skilled visa I'd have to find work in the industry I have degree in.

Our green list roles are a bit limited honestly, my partner does data engineering which isn't covered in the list. She ended up studying and applying for a Post Study Work Visa. It requires you to complete a degree in NZ and then you can have up to three years to work and aim for residency. We have one year master degrees, this is what my partner has done. Perhaps you could even complete your PhD here, I don't know what that process would look like though.
But.. our international student fees are expensive.

Fucking assholes who are makin the country worse fleeing. Good news is they will then shit up that other countries. bad news is once they crap it up enough will come back here and it continues constantly searching for the nicest spot in the turd pile to defecate on.
I could warn you when you make the same mistakes and hope you're smart enough to listen. Literally, nobody else I know has been, but one could try. 20 years, and people don't need privacy because they "have nothing to hide."

Yeah, international fees are super expensive. As someone that has almost always received free education it scares me a lot. Funnily that's still cheaper than paying US universities.
I'm almost done with my PhD so changing the lab would be more trouble than worth it. If it was allowed I could move and finish PhD remotely in 6-8 months, but I kind of need PhD for immigration points (no work experience in last 5 years). A post doc that pays well would be ideal. But I'm open to industry jobs as well.
Luckily my degree is in the green list for now. I heard they change it based on their demands.

Isn't New Zealand the country that just suspended one of their elected lawmakers for doing a tribal dance in their parliament or whatever they call it? If I'm going to go somewhere else I certainly don't want to go to some other bigoted country. I guess if I was rich enough to go though I wouldn't care about that.

It's because the fuckwits in charge at the moment are pretty much swallowing whole anything Atlas group spews out. Think slightly more sane, but less egocentric Trump and you're getting close. Except there are 3 of them.
Cement on top of the bunker entrance is a good plan though. We don't need more Theil's here fucking over the average citizen to get what they want

Fellow canadian here, what's your take?
My take on this situation isn’t any new idea, nz wants to monopolize their image of a political safe haven at a time where the majority of places we hear through the news is turning closer towards the right wing closed off side of government rule. Here in Canada, like most places, we vote in the lesser of the evils, but none of these rich fucks on either side want to truly improve the lives of everyone.
Back to the New Zealand article, I just see this as another toxic plan for their country.
