Back when my father was alive, he taught me that you can buy packs of seeds to grow your own food with food stamps. Seed packs were 50 cents each back then, dunno about now but I'm sure they're still cheap.

Back in 1960, the US minimum wage was $1.00/hour and the average house was $11,000.00
In those days, pretty much any union job would support a family of four with a decent house and money to send the kids to college.
By those standards, today's 'middle class' is poverty stricken.
