Is anyone here so hardcore that they don't even bother with mainstream social media? If its not on Lemmy or Mastodon it must not be important? Anyone that hardcore?

I deleted my Reddit account and switched to Lemmy after the API stuff. I kinda regret deleting my account because it wasn’t until after that I learned about the apps that would scrub your comment history, but Reddit has a tendency to roll those back anyway.

I still sometimes end up on a Reddit thread when searching for some technical issue, but I generally try to browse other forums for solutions first if possible.

ETA: all other social media stuff like Instagram and Facebook I deleted around the time of Trump’s first election. Just got sick of the constant stream of bullshit.

I don't use reddit aside from reading search results. I never post and never explicitly seek it out.

I deleted Twitter years ago. I never used Facebook or Instagram or tiktok. That shit's bad for you.

It's annoying that some places will make announcements only on shitty platforms. None of my friends are this "hardcore" , so sometimes I find out about stuff like a concert or protest or whatever because one of them sees it on Instagram

I haven't browsed Reddit since the creation of my Lemmy account (~2years ago); though I've wound up viewing a Reddit thread or two via a google search on rare occasion. Beyond those two, the only other 'social media' I've used in at least a decade is Youtube.

I had my first 3 months or so where I used both reddit and lemmy, then eventually I switched mainly to lemmy and only used reddit from a privacy frontend where I can’t interact, and then a month or so later I just fully ditched reddit.

I think I’ve been off reddit for a full year now. (Don’t be fooled by my account age, this ain’t my first account).

Lemmy has replaced reddit entirely for me. I only go on reddit every once in a while, just to see how bad it's gotten.

I mainly use Lemmy. Reddit for search results, haven’t seen the home page in years. Never had Twitter or Instagram or TikTok. Still watch a lot of YouTube, mostly for either chess content or movie reviews, sometimes tutorials or professional lectures. Use Facebook for talking to exactly two friends.

Logged into Facebook the other day and saw a friend request. The name was familiar, but not exactly, so I checked the profile. Soon realized he was my ex-girlfriend.

I don't consider myself hardcore, but I haven't posted to Reddit since the API thing, I read stuff there because there's lots of content, but I strongly dislike the official app so I refuse to use it, which means posting would be a hassle.

I don't need more time wasting sites, so I do limit myself to Lemmy. Yes.

                      Lemmy for shits and giggles.

Facebork for relatives and friends who won't get off it.

Is that considered hardcore? I know plenty of people without any social media, but all of them are >40yo, we learned to socialize before gafam

I was on Reddit a long time, never had a Facebook or Twitter or Instagram or Snapchat, back in the dark ages I used Usenet but not AOL or Myspace or anything like that. I try not to use much that is not anonymous.

For a couple of years now just Lemmy, in those two years I have put I think 4 posts on Reddit (people with local questions, Lemmy is not big enough for a good local sub.), and look at it maybe once every two months, not browsing but in answer to specific questions.

I wouldn't describe myself as hardcore, though. Regular person. I look at the phone's news feed, talk to other people, get information other places.

I used reddit for searching stuff purely out of convenience (which lemmy instance do I choose for the site: query?) but for everyday content it's exclusively lemmy ever since I went on a mission of deleting all my commercial social media accounts.

boost probably does too, but boost for lemmy is superior. that's what I use

Yep. That's me. Ditched all social with reddit last to go but still years ago. I don't feel hardcore... I still get pretty much the same hit w Lemmy n mastodon... w/o the ads n bullshit. And nah I don't think that if its not here its not important... but if it really is important I will find out. So precious little really is truly important. Social media being "vital" is one of those great myths that evaporates quickly when you leave it behind.

The reason I would call reddit social media is that I don't agree with any of those rules

The closest I would agree with is 2, and not based on lack of anonymity but instead on persistence of identity, and that being core to the experience

I was part of subreddits where users knew each other as distinct personalities, and could converse across different threads across time, and occasionally IRL from various meetups

When a website doesn't have a lively and persistent 'local' community (maybe geographic, maybe subject etc) it can't really be social

Same here. Most of my reddit usage was on my phone and used baconreader. When they killed 3rd party apps I switched to lemmy. My only reddit usage now is occasionally clicking on reddit links to search results on niche topics. Though i don't do that much on my phone because of the annoyance of reddit constantly requesting to open in app instead of mt browser.

I kinda like that AI scrapes all of reddit as my Kagi searches can summarize reddit results without actually going to reddit.

I also don't use any other social media, such as mastodon. I quit facebook about a decade ago and see zero reason to join anything else.

i don't use social media at all, and i don't consider reddit social media tbh, at least not in the same category. but i don't use reddit either since they fucked the API.
