This kinda bums me out. This is a big reason I use Android, even if I sometimes don't use a ROM.

You're right, but don't be snarky.
Changes to the free part of Android (AOSP) is no longer going to be constantly publicly accessible. Google will release the source code once development on that branch is done. The code is (eventually) open source, but not constantly. It is kind of a damp squib, though.
