        Summary

Global leaders criticized Trump’s new tariffs, which range from 10% to 49%, warning of trade wars and economic fallout.

The UK and Italy urged negotiation, while Brazil passed a reciprocity bill. China and South Korea vowed countermeasures.

Australia and New Zealand rejected Trump’s logic, citing existing trade deals and low tariffs. Norfolk Island was baffled by a 29% duty despite having no exports.

Financial markets dropped, oil and bitcoin sank, and leaders warned of inflation. Analysts say Trump risks fracturing global trade with little to gain economically.

Vlad Vexler makes the point that the point of is not at all economics but that it does have a basis in logic: it is about asserting that he can do this, that his political power is above economic rationality. It is a political move, not an economic play.

You can't just flip a switch to have manufacturing moved to the United States overnight or even five years. Not to mention that even raw goods needed to even start the process that are being tarriffed like aluminum just doesn't come out of nowhere. This is a dumb sledgehammer approach that's going break more things than it fixes

He’s hoping the foreign companies are going to open up shop in USA to avoid the tariffs.

All the guns on the world won't do any good against a missile. Gun nuts are just waiting for an excuse to shoot their neighbors. Jokes on them because no gun can save them from getting 🗡 In their sleep or getting their food ☠️.

Oh yeah, I didn't notice the thread is deeper. I meant lumony, the person I originally responded to. They called Marvel art (which is fine) and called it useless slop or something like that.. So clearly we are talking about art as something that needs to have quality.
I responded to them that their mistake is thinking that its art (in the sense that it needs to have quality). It's just entertainment, not all movies need to be citizen Kane or whatever.
Is it more clear now or..?

If it's good enough for inventors, it's good enough for musicians, writters and software developers.

Exactly. Especially when you figure in the longer scale up time with an invention. You can't just flip a switch and start making money.

                            It's also chaos.

He's making it so nobody can even trust their own country or economy.

You just have to listen and trust him and Trump will make it right ..

There is simple logic in it. Punish everyone, and then let them come to you asking for exemptions. Then he can demand things in exchange. After that it's "Pray I don't alter the deal any further."

UK already asked for an exemption and he said they should buy chlorinated chicken first. If every country responds in the same way he's making bank. If they respond with a boycott on anything American, especially digital services, things get bad.

UK and Italy are playing Trump's game. He doesn't negotiate. He demands tribute and only honours agreements if they are a win for him and he feels like honouring it at the time. Canada has a Trump negotiated trade agreement - the best agreement ever, in his parlance. It is apparently not worth the paper it is written on.
Countries must negotiate trade agreements - with everyone except the USA. And citizens must support their countries by not purchasing any thing from the USA.
As for the few Americans that didn't vote for Trump, so sorry but your fellow Americans still fully support him. So it isn't "just Trump", it is America that is the problem. Trump is simply reflecting who the majority of Americans really are.

Effectively, yes. Tariffs are basically just a sales tax. It's a little more complicated than that but the end result for consumers isn't really any different.

Yes. Its like sales taxes are going up. Unless something is assembled in the US from parts produced in the US there is now a big increase in taxes that must be paid. Most things people buy in the US will now be taxed significantly and thus cost significantly more.
