Several jobs I have had have included mental health days as part of sick time so you can in fact get paid to not come to work if you are feeling sad

Feeling sad is not a mental health issue.

Do you think you could perform your job at 100% if you found out that your child died that morning? Do you think you might have a higher chance of making a careless mistake if your dog was scheduled to be put down when you get home from work? Do you want a surgeon cutting you open the same day they found out their SO cheated on them?

Feeling sad is mental health and can 100% have a serious impact on your job

None of those very valid examples are commonly tied with "today I feel sad".

Imagine the sort of person that had their child die and being "O no I feel sad!".

Luckily life happens inside and outside the workplace. You, or let's say I, I will be sad and working, I will be happy and working.

I won't work, if something egregious like you mentioned happened to me, or even a lot less.

if you're struggling enough you can't force yourself to go into work, that aint playin sick that's a genuine mental health incident that needs to be treated with time off

managers don't need to know whether the illness is brain chemistry, respiratory, or digestive. nor should they care

You wouldn’t categorize your dog being put down as a day where you might say “I feel sad” ?

Exactly... No need to tell them any more than that.

There's plenty days where I'm either burnt the fuck out or feel overwhelmingly constricted by my schedule, as lenient that it is I hate that I have a schedule at all. On those days I'll just sit back and watch a few space/post apocolyptic movies and maybe do a few minutes of work in between them.

I'm able to do that and don't even have to hide it, I tell my boss I'm having a movie day and he usually leaves me alone unless something big pops up. He started doing the same, he's just not as good at it yet.

I've wanted to find a new job for more money for a while, but these kind of benifits aren't listed in job posting and I don't think I'd last anywhere that wasn't as lenient.

They're actually pretty zen once the repetition "clicks" for you.

I wouldn't categorize it as a day where you call in saying "I feel sad" and get a day off. I call it the day you call in saying "They just put down my dog" and get a day off.

And from an accounting perspective what are they going to put in as the reason why you aren’t at work?

Most companies don’t offer bereavement for a pet, personal time off could work but that can be a limited resource and it encourages a person to work through it, unpaid time off is the same thing, wait! sick leave kind of makes sense to use but the person isn’t really sick it’s more like their mental health isn’t doing great because they are sad that their dog is being put down.

My last 3 jobs at a minimum had the ability to take a mental health day for “I feel sad” and I just don’t remember anything later than that and that is in the U.S. which is known for having terrible work leave practices

You may want to have that checked out.

But yes, you get the gist of it. Every company is somewhat unique in the way they may or may not be able to handle such an event.

"I feel sad" will get you in trouble with most companies of earth.
"They just put down my dog" will find some companies more willing to accept that as a reasonable motive to take a day off.
"I feel sick" will let you to stay home in most places / legislations.

Like five years ago, I was a laborer, and I started having a panic attack in the morning before work. I called my boss who was also my friend.

He was sympathetic and told me to just come in to work anyway. I couldn't move.

Later that year, I quit and went back to school for four years, and now can't find a job.

                                  Why is life like this?
