Foldables like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold won’t support on-device windowing in Android 16.

I don't think anyone gives a shit about foldables, but maybe if apple makes one, people will lose their minds over the 5 year old tech.

I think people are missing the bigger picture (heh) here. The use case for this would be to hook your phone to a USB-HDMI or DP cable adapter thingamagig, and then using your phone on a monitor as a full blown desktop computer. Google nerfed this feature on purpose, leaving it only to work on tablets.

That is basically what Samsung DeX does since at least 2010 2017

Yup...and Google has failed to have a competitive alternative since. Does it still work for Samsung? I mean, full blown monitor via USB. I think they removed several features at some point (like forcing it to work only via wireless/miracast or something) after the S10 (the best phone they've made IMHO).

Nope, works absolutely fine with cable as well. Not sure how it was in the past, but I'm not particularly missing any feature

I had a foldable, ZFold 6, that I just got rid of in favor the the S25U. Foldables arent worth it. They're heavy, cumbersome, and most apps aren't developed for their inner screens resulting in stretched out ugly UX. Watching media doesn't result in more real estate as nearly all are in either shot in portrait mode for phones or 16:9 which results in large black bars (foldables have weird aspect ratios).

I couldn't find a real use case for myself outside of maybe Android gaming.

When lunch time comes around I unplug my work laptop from its USB-C docking station and plug my phone in. Works prrfect with my ultrawide, keyboard, and mouse. Then I watch YouTube or Plex while I eat.

I seriously won't consider a Pixel until it can do the same. Samsung's private folder implementation is also excellent. I can have a second VPN in there. I've been wanting virtualization on mobile for a while and this is close.

DeX was first released in 2017.

I have had a different experience and perspective; I had a fold 5 and now have a pixel 9 fold and I love it. I have bigish hands and appreciate a larger keyboard. I watch basically any content I consume via my phone and love the screen size, but I agree about the screens aspect ratio especially on the pixel. I enjoy having a bigger screen to game on and emulate non android games on. I installed moonlight and sunlight and, with the addition of a controller, can now PC game from anywhere without bringing a steamdeck or similar device, which rocks. I don't find it heavy or cumbersome but I also wear stuff with big pockets usually and I could see it being too much for someone who doesnt. I did have ux issues with both phones on occasion but more with the fold 5; I can full screen most games on the fold and it tends to work. I also like multitasking with it by putting apps aside by side, though I'm still getting in the habit of using it.

So it's definitely not perfect and probably not worth it for some people, especially given the price tag, but I'd say it's been worth it for me personally. I'd love for a foldable made by a different brand (not a fan of Samsung or Google) with a better aspect ratio for viewing 16:9, qi2, better fast charging, bigger battery, and hell better custom ROM support while I'm requesting miracles haha. That said I'm hoping this tech is still relatively immature and that we'll continue to see improvement in both hardware and resolution support and maybe I should be more cynical on that front.
