Meant to reply earlier, sorry. I assume that it waits for several inputs to verify. I have completed some streets in my area and there's no changes as of yet. I think its more of a hobby thing. I like going around, getting out of the house and getting some fresh air while having a goal. Things like Pokemon Go just didn't do it for me. I can easily see my tiny town not having much in the way of public infrastructure data, tbh.
I do understand where you're coming from. If its just not your cup of tea, it does seem silly.
As far as I know the edits are applied immediately in the backend, however the rendering of the changes can take some days.

Oh strange. I'll have to check my account. There may be some verification steps I missed, because I know you have to do something to confirm that your edits are trustworthy.

I just checked how it is for me to be sure. My Streetcomplete changes show up immediately on openstreetmap.org/edit.

Who has the authority to dictate what things should be called on a map if not the government? Tech companies are supposed to make these decisions?
No that's the point it would not be in defiance of the government because the government don't have the authority to tell private companies or individuals what bits of water should be called. All president has the authority to do is dictate what federal agencies call it.
The whole reason that everyone thinks this is a massive waste of time is precisely because he doesn't actually have the authority to force anybody to do anything. 20 years from now I highly doubt anyone is still going to be calling it the Gulf Of America, it's just a PR stunt to keep his supporters happy.

you could just as well burn your money or drive your car into a tree, as a form of protest. it's a waste, either of time, money, or energy, but nothing is achieved that way.
Will they be deleting the user complaints after copying them to the empty void? Or is user-complaints a stream that dd consumes, rather than a normal directory or file?

They don't need the authority. If the government says "this is x" and you say "no, this is y" that's defiance.

Truth is, these big companies don't care about you. Or your opinion. You can threaten them about "switching to Linux", but these companies will think twice and say:
- if we take this complaint seriously, we might retain one (1) customer, which makes us $1000 in the future
- if we follow Trump, we might get some favorable legislation, which makes us $10000000
how, do you think, will apple react?
The correct framework for evaluation is "if we kowtow and associate with nazis we might get our people luigi'd randomly"

I can't understand would it even have the part in parentheses in Europe. Think how silly it would look if every location had the regional name for every nearby country added in parentheses after the primary global name. It would be a mess.
Eg:
Germany (Deutschland, Allemagne, Niemcy, Germania, Saksa, <etc>)
Feels to me like special rules Apple has to stroke special fascist egos.
But maybe its not Apple and this is a name set by your local governance. You mind if I ask what country Apple maps you're looking at?

As someone from the outside, you wouldn't even see the US specific naming. If complaining in a bug report about the fact and threatening to abandon the platform in favour of Linux is all you can do, man, don't bother xD.
In Canada we see both. It says "Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America)".
