Imagine you have infinite dollars backing you. What's the thing you'd want to pursue just because it's something you'd like to do with your life?
-
I would do so those things we said we would do as children i.e feed people. But, also go after all these fools destroying our world.
Yeah. I don't see how people hear "infinite dollars" and say they want to get into cooking or develop an app. I would pay millions of people across the globe a thriving wage to take direct action saving coastal kelp forests, rebuild ecosystems without permission, and maybe even get around to some vigilantism.

How's that related to money?
Money can reshape governments

I'd start a gay gym with pool, spa, sauna, bar etc. I'm talking about the kind of place where you will see obscenities.
EDIT: These threads always make me lose my faith with humanity as I read people share their violent and sadistic fantasies.

End income disparity.
Honestly, this would be a decent way to just hit the reset button on the world. You have a magic supply of infinite money? Fuck it, everyone is a billionaire now, in every single currency. Sure, billionaires might try to leverage hard assets instead of liquid cash, but that’ll only get them so far when anyone can just buy their billion dollar business out from underneath them. The short term fallout would be hyperinflation of mythic proportions, and global pandemonium. Long term, we may actually see some socialist change in regards to the fact that money is largely useless now.

Mansions for the homeless. Horses and capes for everyone else. No dog left behind.

Two chicks at the same time. I figure I could make that happen if I had infinite dollars.

I understood the question and your reply perfectly and thats what made it funny.

Reinvent academia and make quality learning accessible to all at all times with free infrastructure. Not only it would be the most fun challenge to solve but it also would keep me occupied for years. Also probably L the biggest positive impact one person could have.

I have a multi-point plan to eliminate homelessness but it would take a few billion to get it going.
-
Establish and fully staff a medical facility, including psychiatric and addiction treatment, including facilities for long term/permanent care where necessary.
-
Establish and fully staff a facility for job seekers, including full skill training, resume assistance, interview assistance, transportation, wardrobe/cleaning, address/mailbox, identification, email/phone access, etc.
#2 also needs specialized staff on hand for those with criminal records.
-
Establish and fully staff a facility for housing assistance, applications, deposit assistance, food assistance, etc. As with #2, there needs to be specialized staff for those with criminal records.
-
Funding for public defenders, courts, and prisons. This is actually a huge problem right now, a lack of public defenders for people who cannot afford representation.
Then you sweep the streets, collect everyone up and figure out where they go.
Medical treatment for those who need it, housing assistance for those employed but homeless, employment assistance for those fit to work but aren't, and the legal system for everyone with outstanding warrants or other criminal behavior.
Ideally you move someone from #1 to #2 to #3 and completely avoid #4.
For the minority who are fit, able, and homeless by choice, because "I AINT PART OF YOUR SYSTEM, MAAAAAN!" Offer them a place to live in return for cleaning up homeless camps and wilderness areas damaged by homeless camps.

Increase the infrastructure and speed of public railways in the US. Trains needs to be atleast (1/3) as fast as airliners.

Create an energy efficient system for carbon capture from the atmosphere and the oceans. Something that can be used at the sites for heavy emitters and also generally around the world.
Create a system to collect the captured carbon and bring it to a central site.
Fire that carbon off into interstellar space.
Use the revenue generated from fees from heavy polluters who can't decarbonise effectively (things like steel making, glass works, air travel) to fund low carbon energy projects and storage/distribution systems for developing nations like in sub-saharan Africa and SE Asia.

Design a Linux phone. So sick of google and android. Currently looking at Fairphone 6 in the US as postmarketOS just got initial support, still need cellular, WiFi, camera to be functional, but considering it just came out a few months ago, pretty impressive.
Wasn't there a plan for an Ubuntu phone a few years back? Whatever happened there?

Mmm...
First thought, and admittedly half baked and very Neil Breen-ish but I just wanted to play along: maybe go semi-Ozymandias and invest in the largest PMC ever, having even aircraft carriers and ICBMs, backed by technological giants like Microsoft and Space X, but chip them all with some sort of kill switch (that immediately explodes if you try taking it out), and slowly but surely destroy Western/imperialistic military forces around the world, starting with their involvement in the global South. They'd be extremely well compensated, so the mercenaries from opposing militaries would join too. Eventually, take this force to the mainland and, after giving them a period of grace for them to come clean and accept their incarceration/fines willingly, take out all the bankers, corrupt politicians, immoral heads of businesses and shareholders, etc etc (including, of course, Microsoft and SpaceX, lol). The police force, stupid defenders of our slavers, would also be given a warning and asked to stay home or join, before getting rolled over by the chipped PMC. After the military forces of the enemies of humanity are depleted, and the people once again feel like they have their destinies in their hands, establish a new era of unironic God-fearing commie love and peace, without the moral relativism, consumerism and hedonism of yesterday. And, foundationally for these new societies, abolish interest. Finally, move this PMC to some remote island and establish a community there (PTSD is a bitch and I don't want veterans going "First Blood" everywhere), one that is materially comfortable and allows them to have some semblance of normality after shedding so much blood (necessary, but still traumatizing).
Second idea: buy all media and news companies and change their entire modus operandi by reporting only facts, with narratives based on morality, and flood minds with the right ideas (Solomonic post-nihilism [seriously, read Ecclesiastes], Jesus' love for others instead of self, Qur'anic verses, but also the forgotten Western wisdoms like Socratic and Humian epistemology, Kantian morality, Wittgenstein... to ease those who have been hurt/disappointed by organized religion and are beasts of propaganda and entertainment into good thoughts [you can't just go 0-100 the same way an alcoholic cannot go from a daily bottle of vodka to nothing]).
I think my second idea is better but I feel I'd just get taken out before making any major change, lol.

I feel like a lot of people are missing the “with your life” part of this. While I’m sure I’d love to magically fix the world’s problems, to answer the actual question:
I’ve always pictured a house built into the side of a cliff face that’s right next to a road. The rock pulls away to reveal the garage whenever I’m nearby. I’d have just a few rooms, nothing too crazy. I’ve always loved the idea of an underground house. I’d also have a decent-sized workshop/garage for the many projects I’m always working on.
I’d also try starting my own business for the first time and I’d be curious to see how my skillset applies. I can’t bring myself to do it in today’s current situation.
That and a Lamborghini. Because why the hell not? That’s what fantasy is for.
All this comes with the disclaimer that I don’t have any kids.
Why wouldn't you want to change others lives positively with your life?

Buy the USA and sell it for scrap, like a venture capitalist.
I have a feeling that's literally the MAGA/Trumpian playbook, lol.

Increase the infrastructure and speed of public railways in the US. Trains needs to be atleast (1/3) as fast as airliners.
So 150 to 200 MPH? I can get behind that.
I think the real problem with trains though is that because they do multiple stops and airlines don't, the maximum speed isn't the issue.
Take a flight from Portland to San Francisco, under 2 hours, 1 hour, 48 minutes says Google.
Amtrak is 21 hours, double the time as driving it (I say this as someone who HAS driven it. A couple of times now, it's actually a really nice drive.)
But the problem is the multiple stops, you can't go 200 MPH because there isn't enough time to get up to speed before you have to slow down for the next stop.
Portland to Salem is 47 miles. Salem to Albany is 24 miles. Albany to Eugene is 44 miles. You don't really have a chance to open up the speed until you hit the run to Chemult which is 101 miles.
1:55p | 2:22p - Portland, OR - Union Station (PDX)
3:36p | 3:39p - Salem, OR - Amtrak Station (SLM)
4:11p | 4:14p - Albany, OR (ALY)
5:08p | 5:15p - Eugene, OR - Amtrak Station (EUG)
8:13p | 8:13p - Chemult, OR (CMO)
9:58p | 10:08p - Klamath Falls, OR (KFS)
12:45a | 12:45a - Dunsmuir, CA (DUN)
2:31a | 2:31a - Redding, CA - Amtrak Station (RDD)
4:12a | 4:12a - Chico, CA (CIC)
6:28a | 6:48a - Sacramento, CA - Sacramento Valley Station (SAC)
7:05a | 7:05a - Davis, CA (DAV)
7:54a | 7:54a - Martinez, CA (MTZ)
8:29a | 8:39a - Emeryville, CA (EMY)
8:54a | 9:09a - Oakland, CA - Jack London Square Station (OKJ)
Then you hop a bus from Emeryville to San Francisco proper which is another hour or so. Or stay on the train to Oakland and get a bus there. Same deal, about an hour.

Wasn't there a plan for an Ubuntu phone a few years back? Whatever happened there?
wrote last edited by [email protected]It didn't get enough attention or make enough money, so Canonical dropped it. Its still on life support and slowly having some features added by the the open source community under the name ubports, but its slow going (they just updated the entire codebase from Ubuntu 16.04->18.04 and most recently 20.04) and not the best approach in my opinion, as i think every app has to be specifically developed for ubports, unlike postmarketOS where you can install anything in the repo. It also uses halium which is a translation layer for the android kernel that allows rhe Linux side to interact with hardware, since a lot of the drivers to make these phones work, aren't mainlined.
Also like any project like this, device support is severely lacking (especially in the US).
Though admittedly, I didn't realize you could get fairphone in the US now, and that it might work on us bands. So ubports on fairphone 5 might be good, dunno.
