Replace the gun with a car.

How much of the "outside" can a kid access today without taking the risk of being it by a car ? As soon as he crosses the door of the house he risks his life.

I don't understand how we accepted that as normal.

Now compare that with a carless world, kids could go everywhere.

Abduction or aggression are still a risk but almost insignificant compared to the risk of being hit by a car, yet this is the one we are talking about.

Man... My parents used to kick us outta the house in the morning. They would tell us we could come back inside for lunch around noon but then we had to leave again. We would bike around and get into all kind of shenanigans. Call them from a payphone and instead of saying our name for the call we would just tell them where we were super fast and then they would hear that and decline the call lmao.

As long as we came home before the sun went down or we called them from a friend's house to get approval for a sleep over they didn't really care what we did all day. Good times.

Cass said the boy’s death did not appear to involve self-defense because the shooting “wasn’t close to the house.”

        JFC..

As ding-dong-ditch pranks surged after being posted to TikTok, other injuries have been documented in recent years.

Yeah.... boy what did we ever do without tiktok lol. Fuck off.

I'm noticing a trend of no-context posts just assuming everyone just read/watched literally the same story as OP did.

              Not really, no.

Firearms and cars are the top two causes of death for children in the USA.

He absolutely wouldn't tolerate happy children outside of his property.

Two scenes after Carl is mildly inconvenienced by happy children:

"Hey where everybody going? The party's just getting started!" As he's surrounded by 3 whoorse he'd enlisted for the evening. Each more busted than the last.

And that would be great if the initial discussion was about gun vs car deaths. But it's not, we're talking explicitly about gun deaths and here about the societal acceptance of a person making conscious decision to shoot a kid over something as stupid as annoying prank.

Now if you want to pull up some data on a person intentionally hitting a kid with a car and killing them for flipping them the bird and how car culture doesn't see anything wrong with that then sure we can have that discussion then.

Ding dong ditching used to surge whenever that one episode of the Simpsons played.

                      Because kids will be kids.

The injuries and deaths seem more linked to adults losing their God damn minds watching Fox News

So this reminds me of when I was taking my CCW class and going over hypotheticals and legal ramifications.

One scenario was you see a kid opening your fridge would you shoot the kid. Now there was a church group there that was also taking the class with us and a few of them raised their hands and one was called.

                        His answer was yes.

My group I was with all looked at each other and went WTF and just shook our heads, raised our hands and went of freaking course not because morally it would be soooo wrong even if it was legally okay.

I remember quite a few adults telling me that children should be seen, not heard when I was little. It was popular and sucked.

So there was this...what do you call it, lady who was very annoyed at any noise ever. Once she pulled a kitchen knife at us.
Well well would you know that all parents and grandmas pulled legal action against that.

I'm from Texas and can count the number of responsible gun owners with one hand. I understand why we need to be armed; still there are a lot of people that shouldn't. Your story reminds of that shooting that happened at a church that happen to have the good guy with a gun ^tm^. There was some talk about allowing some people to be armed at the church I was going to with my parents at the time. Some members and the pastor went to some event with a lawyer talking about some stuff around it and I joined out of curiosity. The overall meeting was pretty mehh, but there was a nice tangent about how much you can drink and still have your gun and ammo. Some cop that was in attendance tried to call them stupid, but they pushed back that its okay if you only drink such percent drink per hour or remove the receiver. Not a great look for the cream of the crop.

They want kids to play outside so they have something to shoot.
