I sincerely hope my government doesn’t pass this up. Feels like we and the whole world would benefit from more cooperation, not less.

Yeah, but non-fascist UK politicians appear to be the runner up in the global championship of feckless opposition, considering the past decade or so.

The UK government are so scared of right wing populists they would rather suffocate the economy with austerity than mention closer EU ties.

Yeah... Would be smart. So Labour, who are trying to be the Tories but from 5-10 years ago, will not do it. Gotta court those undecided centre-right and right-wing voters: the people who still believe in Brexit, even though polls show that's definitely not a majority.

            Sigh.

The problem is that right wing populists vote in all elections.

There's basically a three way tie in the polls at the minute too. Fortunately the looneys are splitting the vote and lack the competence to not implode, but I'd suggest Farage did more to win the last general election for Labour than Starmer did.
