Chromecast (2nd gen) and Audio cannot Cast in 'Untrusted' outage
-
They were discontinued because they lost a patent case. This one I won't blame on Google... cept maybe for their legal team not flagging it for patent infringement.
that's good to know at least, I always thought it was because they wanted to push more smart speakers

The WiiM devices support google cast and many other protocols.
Thanks! I didn't know about these.

If you're getting "Untrusted device" on your Chromecast today, you're not alone. It looks like an expired cert.

Just looked it up. It was with Sonos. It was also when they removed the ability to stream to multiple devices at once (I think that changed , but got rid of a lot of my chrome speakers due to the decline in recognition.)

Patents have gone too far. I just want to stream Spotify to my home speakers; I shouldn't need proprietary bullshit to do that

I always had issues with chromecast. And I haven't used one in 5+ years. I assumed they were better by now?

They're pretty good. The affected models are 10-year-old now. Not that it means they should stop working, but just some context.

The mini is pretty cheap but unfortunately doesn't have google cast.
The pro is still an excellent value as it has way better DACs than the google cast and a lot more format support. But yes, on an absolute cost perspective it's not as cheap as the old chrome cast audios were.
But there's still nothing available at this level of quality and features at this price , most comparible stuff is 2-3x the price.

Well, they're all but discontinued now.

Well shit, I have a couple of BNIB Chromecast audios lying around for years that I've been meaning to put on eBay. Hopefully they fix them so they're not paperweights.

Seems like a fix is on the way.

I've tried it but the audio quality was absolutely atrocious on the first pi generations at least. I got a hat from a third party for it.
The computational capacity of the first gen compared to current gen is huge. As such, there are a few popular projects that try to be an everything-streamer

It wasn't a computing power issue: simply plugging a hat into the same exact pi B2 fixed the issue.
I've tried to Google for an article about this but I didn't get lucky. Essentially it was something about how the jack output was driven using pwm that was causing hissing and crackling if I remember right.
And I concur that it's a good everything streamer if you use the HDMI output or a hat with an audiophile-grade audio output.
Edit: the latest pis might still have a better-driven jack output but I still won't trust it unless I test it thoroughly.
Edit: I was using the B2 and not the 2B but this is the issue I had: https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/questions/38023/3-5-mm-jack-starts-to-hiss-after-sound-is-played
