Someone did this to me. When I was looking for job, an old best friend contacted me. Thinking it was to catch up, we did video chat and tried to recruit me into his scheme. That explains why not one from my class--except for one actually-- is friends with him on Facebook. It took me a while to admit to myself it felt like a betrayal and unfriended him on Facebook.
With all that said, I feel lucky that I have not stayed in my home country. If I have, I probably would have been sucked in to multilevel marketing. I am lucky that I moved to Europe where there is strong social safety net so I did not feel desperate to do what the guy was doing.

side note, does anyone know some actually decent software for mobile with this functionality? I ended up making that image faster in google slides than finding a software with the super advanced functionality of pasting an image on another. everything i found was A) some photo editor with no such functionality B) some AI shit or most often C)both
