What's with all the people on here asking, 'Can I do this with AI, can I do that with AI' lately?
-
So, why are there so many posts asking 'Can I do this with AI, can I do that with AI' popping up on here recently? I thought most of the Fediverse would've been anti-AI based on its general demographics.
Can I ask ai this question to get an answer?

Wouldn't the simplest explanation be that your assumption was wrong?

wrote last edited by [email protected]Even if most of the fediverse is against it, doesn't mean the minority who is interested can't make enough posts to be visible. The majority of the Fediverse is also not rightwing, but conservative communities keep cropping up, too.

There's a loud minority of anti-AI people. Most people don't reflexively hate it, though.

wrote last edited by [email protected]Nah, most people hate AI for one (or more) of a few reasons:
-
Billionaires own it, if it takes off it exacerbates wealth inequality.

It's burning our planet down.
-
The data centers are using entire communities water.
-
The AI is ripping off human artists.
-
People are getting obsessed with it, and the more they use it the less capable they are without it.
I have no idea where you're spending time that you think most people here like AI...

Just because AI is bad in majority of situations, doesn't mean it's bad in all situations.

Maybe Lemmy.org is federated with some different folks, but where are you seeing them? From here, it even seems super rare even in places you might expect, like self-hosted or the dbz0 tech circles.

I have found it somewhat competent at bash scripting

The way it's being pushed into everyone's lives is bad.

Gonna call bullshit on this one, bud.

It's the case with much of popular views one sees on social media, especially the extreme one. I don't meet people in real life holding the views I see represented daily on Lemmy. For example I don't know a single person whose strongly against AI.

Those are reasons you hate AI, perhaps. But on what basis do you say "most people" hate it? Have you seen a survey, or are you simply assuming that most people agree with you?
Social media is extremely "bubbly", and I've found the Fediverse to be bubblier than most in my personal experience. I suspect it's because the individual communities tend to be so much smaller in population than corresponding Reddit ones, it's easier for those loud voices to shout out and dominate conversations.

I'm going to call bullshit on your bullshit unless you've got some data to back it up. Why do you think most people "reflexively hate it"?

I've been middle of the road in AI for years. I think it's fascinating. I love it as a toy. But LLMs have a lot if limitations and they can't be overcome through more compute or better training—mitigated but not overcome.
But man I've seen AI do some shit lately. Claude 4.5, Cline and an imagination can get shit done. Not "sell this to customers" shit but definitely "I know what I'm doing but I have an afternoon, not weeks — I've got you, bro" shit.
Definitely, "I've looked through this code and I want you to analyze it and tell me what you find so I can compare notes in case I've missed something."
Last night I had it tell me "I'm a little confused about this point. I thought I understood it, but maybe not. Can you go over it again?" What the actual fuck? Anthropic has taken this shit way further than I thought possible.
So then I explained it and it builds a whole thing. It needed tweaking. Whole thing was like $10 in API costs. But it saved me so much time and my position pays enough that saving me 10 hours of time makes that a steal.
The AI didn't do it in its own, for sure, but it saved me way more time than I thought it could. You're still fucked if you don't know how to do the thing, but I'm impressed.
Baseline for what hobbyists are going to be able to accomplish is going way up in the future.

Here's two, one I scrolled across and one that came up in a search.

And one of those is on the LocalLLaMA community, which is for people running LLMs locally, so it's a pretty safe bet that they aren't going to have any fundamental ideological problems with LLMs. If you go to [email protected], [email protected], or similar, it'd be very surprising if you found people who had an issue with generative AI.
That one kind of reminds me of when I first showed up here and was using kbin, which puts random posts in the sidebar to encourage discoverability. Both myself and another new kbin user wound up in some thread on a pawb.social community. The other guy --- who probably didn't understand the structure of the Threadiverse or where he was commenting --- was complaining about "all these furries" in the thread.

wrote last edited by [email protected]They don't know what automation is and think its ai.
I've seen quite a few ai products that are just if/then statements ducktaped together that say they have "ai".

Wouldn't the simplest explanation be that your assumption was wrong?
wrote last edited by [email protected]And their other assumption is wrong too - just because i don't like the existence of ai doesn't mean I'm not gonna use it.
If I had a button to make ai go away forever then i would hit that button, but unfortunately that's not possible. Pandora's box has been opened and ai isn't ever going to disappear, so might as well use it to get its upsides since we're forced to deal with its downsides anyway. Not using ai won't cause ai to go away

I reckon I have the same amount of data against AI as anyone has for it.
