I came across this the other day: https://github.com/LinuxJS

You can see the account mass follows other accounts (201k following?). I created a script that auto-blocks and removes these accounts. It removed over 50(!) accounts from my profile. A good 10%-20% of all the people that follow me are bots!

My question is why? Why follow an impossible number of people? What does that accomplish?

201k followings is insane! I've seen some GitHub account that do this but not to this extent. As to why, I am really not sure. It's not like they'll sell the account like with IG or other places

Probably for resale value. Github is a social platform and like the others you can buy stars, followers and co. So maybe to make the bot look genuine/aged account /etc.

eww....wow didnt think of that. One more reason to maybe get off the platform.

Ive stopped adding my new repos to it and mirror on codeberg and my own personal servers. Its still useful for jobs..ish.
