So far, the only waves that have hit have maxed at half a meter, but they're still warning us that more and bigger may come. I live about 3km off the eastern coast of northern Japan and we're just barely outside of evacuation area in my part of the village.

Hazardous waves from strong 8.7 quake are possible on the coast of Russia, Hawaii, Alaska and some Pacific islands after earthquake struck off Kamchatka

          Now a magnitude-8.8

Red alert for economic losses. Extensive damage is probable and the disaster is likely widespread. Estimated economic losses are 0-3% GDP of Russia. Past events with this alert level have required a national or international level response.

            You're right. 1952 Severo-Kurilsk

Almost the same spot too. 15-18m tsunami waves, three of them.

Literally ZERO coverage on this from CNN/MSNBC.

Found a live stream from Hawaii:

Could you pin this post and give the title an edit to clarify this isnt just Japan? This is like most of North and South America and many areas in South East Asia too that could be hit.

                This seems to be huge.

Who else here knows where Kamchatka is because of Risk?

I'm treating Hawaii like the canary in the coalmine and watching the stream, so far it's kind of a nothingburger, but if it accelerates, absolutely!

24" waves in Japan so it looks like everyone else will be fine, no official all clear for many hours yet.

So far, it seems 1.3m is the max we've seen here in Japan. Most of my area is under evacuation order still and trains are all canceled.

I don't know if the depth of it was different, or since it's a logarithmic scale it was just that much weaker, but Russia reported 10-12ft tsunami waves (which is admittedly way too much) Japan reported 2ft, and California got between 2ft and 5ft.

Probably had more to do with the direction the plates shifted rather than total energy of the shift I guess

Yeah, I imagine even a 1ft tidal wave would be enough to sweep a person or a small car away.

Apparently, there are a whole mess of magnitude scales. The 8.8 and 9.0 are given in "Mw" scale, which estimates total energy. It doesn't differentiate between friction and the seismic wave energies.

It’s pretty normal for eruptions and earthquakes to happen together. They are symptoms of the same cause: plate movements.

Yes, thank you for asking. I think they recorded 10cm difference on the island but I'm not aware of any damage, injury, nor death.
