From the limited stuff I know about Canada, please no. They only seem reasonable because they are only ever compared to usa.

I wonder what you're thinking of. On just about every issue there's somewhere in Europe further right or further left. Since this is Lemmy you probably don't mean we like immigrants too much.

In fact, the following EU countries do not (yet) use the euro, but their own currency:
      Bulgaria
      Czech Republic
      Hungary
      Poland
      Romania
      Sweden

With the increasing far-right influence in the EU, Canada should steer well clear. Unless that's something they'd like to contribute to themselves.

The far right is currently collapsing here, and was never as prominent as in France or Germany in the first place.

Don't worry, they physically can't get any angrier. The people mostly support the idea of joining.

In theory they're legally obligated to switch, though. In practice Romania is being blocked by other EU members.

Denmark has a dispensation they arranged when forming the EU.

Sweden and the other countries does not.

When joining the EU you are commited to switching to the Euro when you have fullfilled the criteria for doing so, Sweden has decided to not fullfill the criterias required and will therefore keep the Krona for the forseeable future.

Well you could say it's a treaty of organisations all located by the North Atlantic... TONA? I dunno, it could never work!

lol wut? This is the first anti-Canadian comment I've ever heard. Canadians are unreasonable? "I do not know much about them, but in my self-admittedly ignorant opinion I think they are an unreasonable people". Wouldn't that make us fit right in if everyone in EU was like you?

lmao. I'm going to be laughing about your comment for the rest of the day. Thank you.

Treatment of the indigenous people is the first thing that comes to mind. 5 eyes, black face, (re?)electing a crack smoker.

Just the 5 eyes thing is a deal breaker for me.

That's fair, and IMO should be the deal breaker.

We're a junior partner and net recipient. Our judiciary flat out prevents most of our participation, and we'd likely leave it to join,

He might have been re-elected as a Ward councillor, but regardless you're holding an entire nation responsible for 1 city's stupidity. A nation that for the most part considered them a laughing-stock.

Regardless, I'm not actually in favour of joining the EU directly but fully support bolstering our alliances.

Oh snap I completely forgot about that. Well, I'll hold the behaviour of our historical leaders up against the EU's any day. TBF they've had far longer to put stupid shit on record than we have ofc.

What's the internet regulation like in Canada? What's fiber penetration like? What about public transport? What's Canada's stance on green and renewables? How are votes counted? Is the Canada pro-regulation?

As much as I like Canada compared to the US, they are not European by any stretch of the imagination. I'd be for free trade and free movement as a beginning, but part of the European Union is a bit much.

We are a nation of ~40 million people, speaking two official languages, spread out amongst 10 provinces and 3 territories, encompassing the 2nd largest land area behind russia. We have 4 'recognized' parties (Conservatives, Liberals, New Democrats, and Bloc Quebecois) and the Greens are an up and coming party that have members in the House. We are too diverse to say 'we are all pro anything (except maybe Hockey)'. That said, we are a Social Democracy so regulate far more than the US despite (perhaps in spite of) their economic influence.

Something you didn't ask about but I think you'd likely be interested in is our Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

It's not possible by current legislation aswell. You need to be on the European continent to join the EU.

It's not possible by current legislation aswell. You need to be on the European continent to join the EU.

No, technically you just need to be "European", which is never strictly defined anywhere. It was being considered that Algeria join after all, but it didn't happen because of the civil war (from my understanding of the situation). Canada is one of the most European-like non Europe countries, so it would kinda fit.
