Do you feel sad for people born today?

I have a 6 year old, is that too late?

There will be no rich people if the poor people don't procreate.

and assuming your kids aren’t in a Dhaka slum they’ll be 'ight
you're an optimist.
we're all going to cook, it's just a matter of how long it'll take to catch up to you.
we're gonna cook because some fucks said "I don't care, I want more money."
The science says we might see 4 degrees ultimately. That amounts to more severe weather of all kinds, and means a higher increase in places which will lose snow cover, but it's nothing an AC unit and careful emergency planning can't handle, and it won't necessarily harm agriculture more than it helps it.

The thing is that was the threat of nuclear extermination. It didn't actually happen. Climate change is not a threat, it is happening, right now and is only going to get progressively worse in the near future.
While a climate crisis is more than just a threat, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We have ideas, and models, and educated guesses… But not knowledge.
So far all educated guesses have been overtaken by the speed of events. It is getting worse faster than even the experts had anticipated.
It's getting worse sure. But we have no idea how bad it will get, or what the total effect will be. We have no idea what role technology will play in the future of this crisis, or if recovery would outpace models in the event we decided to take the problem seriously.
Bear in mind that acid rain was a real crisis that was happening in the 80s and the hole in the Ozone was a real crisis that was happening in the 90s. When we made an honest effort to fix those problems... They got fixed.
Also, we can guess at what species will or won't fare well, but not how they'll adapt or what else might thrive in a new environment.
And yeah, it's possible that temps will spike faster than we could ever imagine or deploy solutions and we'll all bake to death in a sprawling global desert if we don't all starve from the sweeping famine. I just have more faith in human ingenuity, and will than that.

I personally cringe when I hear a friend js having a kid. All I can think of is how bad theyre going to have it. Hell id definitely have been better off being born 20 years earlier, but these new kids are REALLY screwed unless they have super rich parents.
"Nothing new under the sun" I suppose!

Whatever the world would become, they would live an interesting but very harsh time of population shrinking, due to demographic transition (except african children), and even if we fear about their early ipad brainrotting process, they'll figure out how to make their way in life, because it'll be chaos if they don't.

Ill bet i touch more grass than the average lemming-i just enjoy conversation with others with differing views.
I don’t think a terminally online view necessarily implies one only spends their time online but that their opinions or a set of them are formed based on online discourse.
And to extend my view for the sake of conversation, no I don’t think that view makes sense to me for two reasons. One the world has had many catastrophes throughout history that felt very world ending. I think global warming is going to seriously alter life as we know it but I hope it’s not the end of the human race. Regardless I will not live with a pessimistic view drinking myself to death because of this fact.
Two, if you want an alternative view I’ll give you my Buddhist one. Life is shaped by birth, death, rebirth, and causes and conditions. There is so such thing as the end of anything.

All the time. I fake being happy for the parents and on the inside think What the fuck is wrong with you?
Im glad im not the only one.
Has nothing to do with lemmy or reddit either. I've always felt that way even when. I was a kid I couldn't imagine why people want them. Must be something in the genes because im pretty sure my parents shouldn't have had kids either lol!
-
Absolutely yes I feel bad for them.
Some people will say that now is the best time to be alive, but I think we have hit our peak and are facing an ugly drop-off. Climate change is a big one, but I think that technology is quickly becoming detrimental to the average person because it is leading to a consolidation of wealth and power in the hands of fewer and fewer.
The peak was probably 08-12 recently. I think its tanking fast.

Yes, I felt a deep-seated disappointment when my siblings or friends announced their pregnancy. People like to spout the cliche that every generation is born into crisis but the conditions this one is inheriting are particularly dire.

Can I get a source?

this is how hot it is today. add 4c average warming, and these spikes will be even higher and more lethal. people are dying in this heat today.
but it’s nothing an AC unit
lol, when everyone cranks their ac and the grid blows, good luck with that.

Generators, batteries, just a better grid. If it happened tomorrow it would be scary, but it will be gradual. Really poor people in vulnerable areas might not have the option to adapt, which I mentioned, but the average Lemming does.
Is dying your retirement plan or something? I'm not the one contradicting the experts here.

Fusion is just 50 years away, every year!

I feel like most people today have kids just because they feel that's what they should be doing or because they just want a kid. I feel having kids is almost, incredibly selfish? If that makes sense.

No. I felt sorry for people born yesterday, but I think today's kids will be OK.
Not sure about tomorrow, though.

What an odd take. Reproducing is arguably the #1 motivation, and purpose, of all life on this planet. Biologically anyway. You're taking issue with a fundamental trait of life that's baked into our DNA.
May as well deem people selfish for wanting food and shelter too.

Every single generation talks about how good it was when they were young. This generation will ultimately be no different. And as a parent, I am doing whatever I can to ensure my kids are happy.
On top of that, you can't miss what you never had. Humans are adaptable and resilient, and kids' imaginations are unstoppable, and my own kids, despite the constant intrusion of digital dopamine, still love to build forts, and play with Lego, and dolls, and just run around being goofballs.
Just gotta hang on.
how good it was when they were young
Sorry did I miss a decade? My youth consisted of hanging chads -> 9/11 -> The War on Oil -> 2008 financial crisis -> the death of Hope via congressional fuckery -> Trump. When were things good...? I had hope for universal healthcare with Obama and hope for Bernie before Trump 1.0 but now I'm not sure what to look forward to. That said; can't stop won't stop.
I honestly and truly hope you and yours remain healthy and happy. I don't begrudge you that or wish you ill. But I haven't seen good times and at this point don't really expect to.

if it happened tomorrow
it's happening NOW.
buildout all the grid you can, it won't be enough for everyone, and when it collapses, everyone's fucked.
Is dying your retirement plan
Did your parents have any children that lived? I bet they regret that.

Yeah, I don't get how people can think like this but not want nukes to take out everything. Like you're living this shit, too, if you are willing to keep living this shit, why do you assume it's a bad thing for anyone to bring someone else into it? Anti-natalism is pro-extinction from my pov.
Not that I have an issue with people taking themselves out of the gene pool or anything, I just find the position wildly inconsistent with anyone who wants to continue living themselves.
And to be clear, I mean specifically the "if you choose to have a kid, you are bad" position, I can understand "having kids is not for me, I don't want to do parenting".
