On a scale of -10 to +10, are you technophobic (-10) or are you technophilic (+10)

I overall like new technology, but just a bit fearful at malicious people misusing it. Its not technology I fear, its the people.
wrote on last edited by [email protected]I'm a tech guy, I work with it all day everyday, I love it and what we can do with it. But I also absolutely hate what's being done with it. I love the tech behind generative AI, LLMs, automation, computers in general, Linux, etc. But man, when I see the shit being pulled by tech companies and governments, it makes my blood boil, and I'm genuinely terrified for the future. We could do so much better...
So probably a strong -6

Probably on the upper end, like an 8 or 9. I currently own more computers than most people will probably ever own in their life.

I've been an IT Professional for almost 30 years and have had to keep up with the computer industry that entire time. These days, I'm more in management and processes, so no more sitting in front of a console with a pager on my hip.
During the technical portion of my career, I was a full +10, at least for computers and associated technologies used in very large enterprise environments.
In my personal life, I'm ore of a +2 or +3. I usually have the previous year's flagship phone (my current phone is a Pixel 8 Pro) and keep it till it dies. My audio electronics are mostly from the 90's, because they are high end components (McIntosh) that I have taken decades to procure. Some of which I actually had to fix in order for them to be usable.
All the computers in my house I bought used and refurbed myself. I think the newest one is my computer and it's a Dell Precision 7550 and it's at least 4 years old. The network in my house is more current. My router/firewall one of Ubiquiti's latest and greatest, although both WAPs in my house are about 7 years old. My previous firewall was PFSense that I ran on a VM on Proxmox. It became too much of a pain if there was an issue with Proxmox, then there was an issue with the internet, although I did have a backup, so I decided to just separate the two.

I’m starting to think that technology-wise Ted Kaczynski had the right idea.

I like new technology but most "new" is just recycled old stuff that is being marketed as new. Like with processors: there hasn’t been a groundbreaking upgrade since 2020. For me, best thing that happened since then is ELRS for controlling RC stuff, and that is FOSS - there’s reports for >100km range which is crazy. Currently they’re working on a FOSS digital video transmitter like DJI, Walksnail and HDZero have. While it‘s somewhat usable it’s still pretty early on development, only about 100m of range and close to no penetration.

I'm not a technologist and I don't switch from what works to something new just because it's new...
...but I do keep up with advancements in areas that interest me such as robotics, machine learning, infomath (including encryption), web standards, and game development.

I work with it.
I dislike all new stuff because Most of it is garbage. After a few years I adopt the surviving stuff that I can see provides me with value, not just a monthly subscription.

+7, IT professional that has a home lab where I cosplay as a system admin. I also agree people are the problem, not the tech or tools, and there are many times where I feel like a tech priest from 40k (they pray to the machines instead of knowing how they work) I do know some people that would classify as +9 or +10, they are wizards who spend their days pondering their orbs (screens).

Given that there's technology baseline for even responding to your question, I think your results are going to be skewed.

I've been running from my problems by immersing myself in tech, I'm not sure if that makes me like it more or less but I've gotten very very good at what I do.
Last night I set up an event ticketing service so friends can come to an event I'm hosting without me having to schedule them or manage capacity. Then I cried myself to sleep. -2
But I also get to set up stuff for my collectives to use, like nextcloud and wordpress and it's awesome to be able to turn a grassroots bunch of ratbags into a semi-professional looking bunch of ratbags. +10

I am a pendulum, swinging between both 10's at a rapid frequency tha sometimes produces a sound loud enough to drown out my fits of rage at the stupid piece of shit technology that I just bought because it was cool

+10 I think. I have an off grid solar powered trailer with a raspberry pi that controls it and a cell hot spot so it communicates to home base. I'm a geek.

I have more than a few Kickstarter beta products collecting dust, and I've broke my arch install over using the AUR

Maybe a +3 or 3.5 max. After having a little bit of experience with artificial "intelligence", I have been doing everything in my power to block it out of my life.
People can call me a Luddite for this, but my response to those people is that I can at least think and form an opinion without needing an AI telling me how to think or what to feel.
The only exception to the AI rule for me are the people who either use their voice or get consent from a friend, to work together, to use their voice for something like creating a Diffsinger or ENUNU voicebank as that requires a lot more work than just typing a prompt on a keyboard and, when done in an ethical way, doesn't involve theft in general. Similar reasons I support UTAU voicebanks and older vocaloid voicebanks that are basically confirmed not to have used AI.
As for other forms of technology, I will absolutely agree with OP on fearing the people over the technology, even if I don't fully understand it all. Except for VR. I'm 100% worried, with the way my brain currently works, that someday we'll have realistic enough VR that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference and that scares me a lot.

4, I am known to be reluctant to adopt new technology, IE, I don't want to be a betatester.
