A random mod being unreasonable doesn't turn us all into reddit though. Unlike reddit, we can always open another comm with the same name and avoid the bastards.

Newbie here. What if the mod issues an instance-wide ban?

Then they're an instance admin, not a mod, and you probably didn't want to be on their instance anyway. Unlike an admin ban on Reddit, it doesn't stop you using Lemmy/mbin/Piefed as there are other instances.

Bro, I can't believe someone could be that offended over the word bro. Like, really bro?

My daughter and her bestie call each other bro all the time. I refer to them as you guys all the time too. Some language that sounds gendered is in fact, not. I'm not ever trying to be a dick, but I refuse to walk on eggshells either.

In the current internet it's sadly necessary to enforce very strict rules to keep the space civil. The vast majority of active users are trolls (just look at the success of Toilet Paper's Kirk's campaigns against intellectuals). Keeping bro-culture out is not a bad idea since it's a quite toxic culture often hostile towards women and queer persons.

If you're looking for bro spaces, go somewhere (or create a comm) that's accepting of it. If you like the space, simply follow the rules.

I’ve upset a prominent mod on Lemmy.world so much by simply having a differing opinion that they banned me from their sub instantly and permanently (with no ban reason given) and then must have vine and asked their other mod buddies to ban me from their communities that I’d literally never so much as even visited lol. Within probably 15 mins of the initial ban I was banned from 3 other communities permanently, and that mod wasn’t a mod on them.

I messaged a few of the other mods on the main sub to let them know what he did, but didn’t hear so much as a peep from them.

Are you even a ā€œprogressiveā€ if you’re not constantly actively looking for things to be offended/outraged about so you can try and censor someone who has a different opinion?

If by ā€œconstantly lookingā€ you mean ā€œsurrounded by fucked up shit from a country that claims to be free and take care of its own, but literally the oppositeā€ then yeah I suppose it does

Plenty of people use the word without actually being toxic at all. Sure, the people you're talking about excessively use that word. But using that word doesn't make you toxic. There is no history of that word being used to hurt people, unlike the n-word for example.

How about we judge people by what they are actually saying instead of the words they're using?

Yeah were there already, I once said ā€œthat’s lunacy, it would never workā€ in a political news thread and got removed for ā€œabelismā€ lol

And that’s when I’ve been told why, most times it’s because you disagree with the echo chamber and you get a removal or straight up ban.

It's already been a playground for mods with an agenda.

The good thing is that we can all start up alternate communities without the abuse. The problem is that it's rare to find admins/mods that don't abuse their power.

No joke, Periodic changing of mods might be a better long term strategy. Or like you said a small election from time to time.

Regularly electing new mods will eventually lead to a similar path of only attracting the power hungry, (like any political position). Or you simply run out of qualified people silly enough to put up with the great unwashed masses, (riding herd on a community of ant kind is a very large pain in the arse-- Got that tee shirt don't want another)

Or even better - just let us moderate what we see ourselves. There’s no need for some wannabe dictators to get to decide what we can read or say. I don’t need or want an echo chamber of the mods preferred:allowed opinions and ideologies. As long as it doesn’t break the law just leave it and whoever said it alone, and let everyone else decide how they want to handle it.

Lemmy is decentralized and admins of any instance can see upvotes/downvotes and moderate their instance as they want, we are far from reddit where the ceo of the company can decide to censor the whole platform.

I would like to highlight another problem that makes lemmy stink as much as reddit: why are you posting this in the asklemmy sub? Popular content on global frontpage is shit and a bunch of sub are hijacking all the traffic, had you posted this in another sub there would be 5 comments at best.
