In theory sure, but not in reality. Most communities are already consolidated on here, so shitty mods have control just like they do on reddit. “Just make a new sub if you don’t like the mods” didn’t work in Reddit and it doesn’t work on the fediverse for the exact same reasons.

What we need is for mods to basically have no power over users or what they say. No bans, no deleting comments, no removing posts - just let people ignore/block who they want, and give them robust filtering options. It would be infinitely better for everyone who isn’t a big girls blouse who craves censorship of differing opinions.

This is a luxury opinion you get to hold when there aren't communities organized around harassing and hassling you and everyone like you. Your idea has been tried again and again, and it always turns into a Nazi bar.

There is nothing more free than the ability to build a new community with rules you prefer. You have that freedom. You don't have the freedom to show up in an existing community and insist they change to suit you better.

      What a thin skinned pussy.

They should go back to being a Reddit and Discord mod

Yeah, RaoulDuke is a thin skinned pussy, coming here and whining that he got banned from somewhere he doesn't want to be. Oh no! Who cares?

I don't think there is a way to view an entire instance from another one. I may be wrong but I haven't been able to figure it out in 2 years.

It depends on your app. With Mlem if you navigate to a user or community you can then view the instance.

Friendly censorship of an inoffensive word. With the threat of being banned for flavor. SO friendly.

                  OP never said bro.

                  Right, my mistake.

OP is also free to downvote however he pleases.

I just wanted OP to know that the way of his voting created 'Reddit'. If he wants to avoid it then the voting must change. There are powertripping mods and admins on Lemmy but the fediverse makes sure that that is not the problem.

Let me get this straight, you're saying that powertripping mods aren't a problem, because you could technically have the same content on a other instance, but you think a single downvote is a problem?

What's the alternative here? You're so against the downvote being used as a disagree button, so do you think OP should've just openly commented their disapproval? How do you think this would've ended vs a powertripping mod?

If all choices you can make to show disapproval result in bans, is it your fault, the powertripping mods fault, or are you saying we should just shut up and take it?

Isn't that the default if a user selects auto-generated name?

Yes, and since actual users are more likely to choose their own name those can indicate bots

The only meaningful difference between here and Reddit et al is that no one is exploiting our addictions and compulsions for financial gain here.

the other big difference is that the hurdle to sign up is slightly higher (you have to write 1 sentence of application to register an user account) and that keeps a lot of normies out, which is why the quality of discussion is slightly better (but only slightly).

and also fediverse has less ragebait because ragebait is given by big platforms to keep users on their site for longer, so there's that advantage. less toxicity.

Yes. I think that's how everything can develop respectfully.

The population is better in several important ways but the lack of well adjusted and social "normies" is exactly what makes the experience little better than Reddit.

On Voyager you can set tags on users and add an arbitrary amount of up or downvotes to their account. Looks like another will get the -1000 downvote + twat tag award!

That's not really the typical situation I see people arguing over. It's usually the person being called it who's upset, and they don't want a ban, they just want kindness

That's not the situation in question though - the admin in the OP has banned it because they personally don't like the word. This is exactly the situation being described here by the commenters.

Downvotes are only blocked on that instance to user accounts created from it. Accounts from other instances can still see the downvotes (and vote).

Those votes don't affect the score on the original instance, though. Other federated instances will still be able to calculate a truer score in that scenario.

Its interesting how people are dogpiling this person in the name of "freedom of speech"...because they don't like what he said?

There is nothing I care less about than the rules in some tiny forum I don't plan on visiting. Brigading him because someone is in love with the term "bro" and can't live without it is weirdo behavior.

Its interesting how people are dogpiling this person in the name of “freedom of speech”…because they don’t like what he said?

To be clear, they don't like that he's threatening to ban people from somewhere over speech. That is, first of all, not mere speech - that's an action they're threatening to take.

Second, it's not some kind of gotcha or contradiction that some speech might be disapproved of in the defence of free speech. You might espouse the principle of peacefulness, yet no-one would suggest that responding violently in self-defence was in contradiction to that. Being in favour of free speech doesn't mean being in favour of all speech; many and varying exceptions are made, for example for hate speech, threatening speech or indeed speech which has the effect of restricting or chilling the speech of others. And we're not talking about a violent or legal response here but rather dogpiling - and while that does chill speech in general, it's not on the same level so deservedly has a lower bar.
