Anyone else that likes to put their phone in airplane mode to decompress/sleep?
-
It's probably just my brain, but I'm thinking about how everything's still received even though you can hide the notifications
If I'd turn it into airplane mode I'd be uneasy. DnD no issues there because emergencies come through but in airplane mode? Nope if anything happens somewhere I won't be able to be reached. And then dealing with that seems worse to me. So I have it automatically jump into DnD at 21.00 and go out of it with the alarm in the morning.

I usually do this every night when I'm about to sleep, and also during times when I want to decompress from the barrage of notifications. Sure, DND mode is a thing but I really enjoy the feeling of being unreachable sometimes. Having it on DND still makes you receive the notifications. It's also easier than turning your phone on and off. Regarding emergencies, I really don't have any situations where it'd be so pressing for me to react immediately to something. And either way I'd never sleep having volume/vibration enabled from calls.

i use greenify to have nothing running and have notifications disabled always. airplane would prevent me from getting emergency alerts

I use the Focus feature on IOS. I selectively silence the stuff that aren't important (email, messaging apps, social media, etc.) and keep calls and emergency alerts active. 90% of calls I get are spam or sales calls and they don't happen at night when I sleep. If I get a call in the middle of the night, there's a high chance it's important or it's an emergency, so I don't silence it.

I frequently turn off my phone. Sometimes I leave it at home when I go for a walk in the neighborhood.

wrote on last edited by [email protected]Similar here. My DND runs automatically between 10pm and 7am, but I have a small number of people whitelisted whose calls will come through. Mine also has a setting where it will let someone through if they call twice within fifteen minutes. I don't think anyone's ever actually phoned during that time block but it gives me peace of mind to know I can still be reached in an emergency.

Tbh I don't really have any emergencies I can imagine necessitates me responding in the middle of the night. But I guess it depends on one's life.

I kept my home phone number and went with magic jack for very little money. That way, I only have to carry my phone when I'm out. Even then, I don't always bring it with me or I switch it to focus mode. I'm not a paramedic and I'm never armed so I expect for a real emergency, my friends and family would probably call 911 instead of me.

I reason the same regarding emergencies!

One thing to consider might be a literal emergency alert. But I guess the frequency of those really depends on where you live.

I use sleep mode on iOS and that will block basically everything. Emergency alerts will still go through, which is important to me as I live in a very wildfire prone area. My mom is white listed as well for family emergencies. Sleep mode will also allow a call to ring if they call twice back to back and that has allowed my brother to reach me in the past during an emergency. I’d be too nervous to completely cut data and cell service.

I never really understood doing this as I hate getting most notifications when in awake. Unsubscribe and filter spam emails, disable notifications you don't want, and uninstall any app that provides notifications that can't be disabled.
I want my waking hours to be as undisturbed as my sleeping hours while still retaining my awareness for friends, family, and emergencies.

Not to sleep but I turn my phone off at least once weekly or try to go somewhere without signal

I strive to do this too but alas it's easy to get distracted...

My phone is always in airplane mode. I use voip (which requires wi-fi ) so I have no need for a full time celltower connection. For the times I do have a data plan, I'll turn off airplane mode when I need to use data.
I use the phone as an alarm clock but the phone never wakes me while dnd is on. It's all about setting it up the right way.

I have a DND schedule. I have some things that are allowed through like calls but that's about it.

Not only that, it charges in a separate room from where I sleep. Whatever it does, it doesn't wake me up.
For waking in the morning, I hate the buzzing or claxon type alarm, so I got an alarm clock that turns on to an FM station and turns up the volume until I get out of bed to turn it off.
