What is something you believed was normal or true as a kid, but later found out it was not?

That there is a God, and he loves you, but he will send anyone to eternal torture who does not believe in him.
Took me way too long to find out that that makes no fucking sense.

The United States is a righteous, fair, and just country.
Every thinking Latin-American knows different.
Same with us natives.
My ancestors should have slaughtered them as they came ashore.

Isn't the opposite true
Not really. Even first cousins can have children without much chance of problems.
It's when siblings or parents breed together that problems happen.

Abuse (verbal and physical) being normal
that you can "unlearn" autism and adhd (aka forcing someone to mask)
that the tides do affect rivers and lakes (that one i only learned last week)
drinking alcohole at a young age and drinking lots is normal and okay
weed smokers with the image of typical drug users
anything religiouse (though even in second grade i unironicly said "i belief only in facts and science. Mrs Teacher, is there a religion that is about the facts of science?" Yeaaah the autism has always been strong)

I thought cities were all walled.I lived in a city surround by a wall, and played Civilization 2 where towns would have walls.I was so confused when we traveled to next town and it just sprawled everywhere

The beach where I used to live had quicksand and people had to be rescued from it at least once a week, usually more. So it was a pretty big concern, actually, and I had to make sure my kid and his friends didn't end up in it (they did, several times).
