But wearing them because of one’s own religious reasons and being forced to wear them because you’re committing a crime if you don’t do are two completely different things.

But the original comment blamed war for women covering up in these nations, and that just isn't strictly the case. I'd wager the photographs on the left are of the liberal elite in these countries back then, whereas if you stepped outside town it already looked like the photographs on the right.

Definitely not war, and like you say, they're more devout now than before. Back then they are devout but not to the point of wearing a niqab or burka like what we seen today. What happened is far right indoctrination since they were a child, the world is moving toward right as we can see from a lot of country.
