A great app. I use the (FLOSS) LibRedirect browser extension to automatically send YouTube links to FreeTube.

I've been using this a lot lately, and it's been great after a bit of a learning curve. It even incorporates some of the functionality from the addons and userscripts that I needed for YouTube, like getting rid of clickbait titles/thumbnails and blocking specific channels. Since you never really have a tracking profile when using YouTube this way, it's very obvious when YouTube is trying to shoe-horn in political channels and clickbait, and you can just continually keep blocking those channels in the recommended section until you get all of them. I'm still missing a way to boost the volume on certain videos that are too quiet for me, though. I use LibRedirect to auto-open YouTube links in FreeTube. FreeTube has occasionally broken because of YouTube API updates, which requires them to figure out the problem and push a new FreeTube release (which could take a day or more), but other than that I'm fairly happy with it.

That's a really cool extension, thanks for sharing.

I definitely notice the political ragebait suggestions too. I've had all kinds of blocking on the platform for a long time, so it's scary to think (but not overly surprising) that that is what they're trying to spoonfeed everyone.

my favorite feature of freetube is the channel blocking and keyword blocking. my block list is probably thousands of items by now. consequently, my second favorite feature is the ability to hide the block lists 😂

(my fav feature is different than most important feature, which is of course privacy from YT/Big G. so please don't complain that i don't care about privacy)

Reading through the documentation, SponsorBlock being baked in has nearly sold it for me. That said, I've been building up my history for years and am never shown anything outside of what I might enjoy watching. Is there a way to import that?

It's not that they want to spoonfeed political ragebait specifically, I think. They want eyes on their ads, because that generates revenue. It's just that political ragebait keeps many people more engaged. More views = more ads seen = more money. Means to an end. It's a very cynical worldview.

Takeout is offering no options other than CSV.

I disagree, conservatives reduce taxes on corporations and the rich. Alphabet has all the incentive to subtly (or not) nudge the narrative so more people vote conservative.

Converting CSV to JSON is probably just a matter of translating column names to property and wrapping them all in a list. But if that's the case, it may be worth opening an issue on FreeTube to have the docs and code updated.

I've noticed that more and more things are breaking on a VPN. That's my first guess. I've allowed all domains through on NoScript, but the dropdowns don't do anything.

can anyone ELI5 why music streaming never fragmented like TV streaming did?

An album being exclusive to a particular platform seem to be incredible rare. TV platform continuously remove things from the catalog to reduce costs but that does not seem to happen often in music.

Hmmm, I'm trying to like it but apparently there's something wrong going on with their delivery pipeline.

The last release is dated 2025-05-01. By that time there were already issues with subtitles and currently in that release version no subtitles load at all. The tracker to that issue is this one which marks as "solved" yet that certainly is not the case. At the very bottom they say you have to go to "nightly" - that is go to Github actions and select one among those labelled "build" and download the desired artifact. Meaning, a fix has not actually been released.

However I've visited six different runs of nightlies under "Build" and they do show the artifacts, but they are just a table of text, with no links or uploads. So,

1.- How is one able to download such artifacts?
2.- Why is the issue marked as "solved"?
