Your not actually lowering the power, it's just lowering the duty time.

70% means that it runs only 70% of the time.

Microwaves are either on or off. There is no in-between.

Its the same as running something for 30 seconds letting it sit for 20 then running it for another 10.

It's also a large reason frozen dinners have you stir them.

the whole point of duty time is that it has basically the same end result, and no full blast then waiting is not the same thing as shorter bursts over a longer time..

Correct, but I think most people don't think about that.

And in the case of a microwave, it makes almost no difference if you're running longer than 30s

Dang. I love veggies. Why wouldn’t you use the 7 button though? I don’t get that part. You don’t put on random times like 17 seconds? Or 70% power?

Maybe someone is stabbing a potato with a fork and putting it in there fore 7 minutes. Not sure.

Not parent, but when a minute isn't quite enough, 77 seconds might do the trick. Multiples of eleven are quick to enter, and with a simple nuker with no "minute" button, 66s is easier than 1:00.

My microwave has a half minute add button, but it takes 2-3 seconds to accept another press of the same button. This condition is not true for any other button on microwave.

I just manually type in my times now.

I find frozen grapes similarly satisfying

Frozen blueberries are heavenly. If you rinse them with water and let them sit a few minutes, they sometimes develop a thin icy shell. Immaculate.

I guess OP's microwave is like mine. Buttons 1 through 6 set the timer by minutes. The seven button does not. Don't know why they made it like that but pushing 6 gets you six minutes of cook time but 7 just beeps unless you hit the power, timer or defrost button. Of course 8 and 9 don't do anything either. I never use the timer button. If the time calls for anything over 6 minutes I hit the 6 button then the 30sec button until I get to the time I need.

The +30 seconds button that auto starts my microwave gets used probably 10x as much as the others.

Seeing your reply in my inbox reminded me that I got up to get some ice-cream, but forgot again en route to the freezer. On the bright side, it means I still have ice-cream in my freezer

This is only the case for cheaper models. There are models with inverters that actually run at lower power.

I am like original commenter, I gotta turn down the power because my microwave is a deadly lazer (1200 W)
