They were gifted to the US by Japan years ago which led to the DC Cherry Blossom Festival. The Nationals (MLB team) have cherry blossoms on the City Connect version of their jerseys.

Man not just DC but Philadelphia and Newark and Connecticut have more trees and also do a great job of being spring beauties by gift of the Japanese cities as thanks.
