I used to share an office with a contractor in the UK.
Their sickie policy was that you didn't get paid at all for the first four days of sickness, but for periods of five days or longer you got paid the statutory sick pay rate for the entirety of the sick period.
It was to disincentivise the "one day wonder" sickies after a night on the piss or when you couldn't be arsed going to work - but predictably, all it did was guarantee that people would be off for at least five days so they got something out of it.
Absolutely backwards.

Reminds me of an old office that changed their policy so that you needed a doctors note for even a single sick day. They thought it would keep people from calling out for a day for headaches. All it did was cause all previous 1 day sicknesses to be extended to 3-5 days because no doctor here writes a note for anything less.

Or take Friday off.
"If you don't come in on Friday, then don't bother coming in on Monday."
"4 day weekend, woohoo!"

I definitely don't like that word.
Agreed on that front. I just couldn't resist the alliteration.

I definitely don't like that word.

Our company has a policy that if you're sick for 2 days or more, you have to have a doctors note to return. So faking sick comes with a price tag for me. Also, any time I've ever joked about being sick, I actually end up sick. I'll just call around and get someone to cover for me, then tell my supervisor I'm taking a personal day instead of earning some bad karma.

bad karma for being sick?

Places I've worked if you're sick for more than 2 weeks (accumulated) in the calendar year you were fired.

wrote last edited by [email protected]We used have that until some dumbass in our company fucked up our insurance plan. $20 for total telecare, it was awesome.

You can be fired for the colour of your shirt. So it's not that surprising.

Oh, okay, it's the US, makes sense now.

Lol, that was my thinking. That'd be super illegal here.

Just getting a doctor's note costs something in the US? Whenever I need a note I call my GP and ask the receptionist to write me one. The doctor doesn't even do anything except sign the paper that the receptionist prints out! Charging for that seems crazy

Hard disagree. Try saying it out loud. It's awesome.
