one of these days governments will get it through their head that there's no point in trying to keep marijuana illegal

Most of them are currently busy making abortion and being trans illegal, so I don’t really have high hopes for sane developments there in the next decade.

This article is pretty good in that it points out that Thailand has regulations in place to limit who large quantities are sold to. As always the problem is not legitimate sellers, but illegal sales.

And of course illegal sales will happen no matter the regulatory framework. This just hurts legitimate sellers, and the exchequer through decreased revenue .

Why are edibles illegal if smoking is legal?

I thought edibles were far healthier (and they don't smell awful), am I mistaken?

Edibles cause the body to metabolize 11-hydroxy-THC in the liver, which does not happen when weed is smoked. Due to this, edibles can be stronger than smoked weed, and they can be overwhelming even for experienced stoners.

It is a common rookie mistake to think the brownie sounds friendlier than the joint—any novice pothead should consider smoking or vapes for controllable and predictable dosing, while edibles are better suited for the ride or die heads who have experience with surfing high levels of intoxication.

Neither one will kill you, both should be legal.
