Nah, most people from small towns never leave.

I know that most of my class is still here and are either addicted to meth, have a gaggle of kids, are Jesus freaks, or some combination of the above.

They probably don't recognize me because I put on 40lb of muscle (I was way too skinny in HS) and don't have long hair anymore.

I'm one of the freaks that moved from my small town to a small city, they deserve some of shit they deal with.

I lived in a shithole. Part of the reason why my hometown is losing population is because there is no industry, only fields (in the hands of very few people) and shops. You either move to a city to study a degree (and probably don't return) or stay working in the fields for peanuts. Those luckier get a job in a local job, working 10 to 22 monday to sunday, generally without a contract (so no benefits, no retirement...).
My bullies were not the smartest; for what I saw last time I went to visit, they are not enjoying life, rather surviving.

We are from similar places and have similar viewpoints. Different strokes for different folks is all I'm saying.

I had someone walk in to my work one day and call my name. I turned and greeted the customer and asked what I could do for them. They confirmed my name again, which they had correct, and then said "you went to XHS right?" Confirmed my graduation year even. "Uh, yeah... That's right?" I said with a confused look on my face.

I just stood there befuddled. I stared at this dudes face for seemingly an eternity. No recognition. I couldn't figure it out. For some reason, he didn't say his name and I was so flabbergasted that someone who lived 4 states away, that I apparently went to school with, happened to be on vacation in MY town and walked into MY store... that I didn't even ask. I was super busy, and suddenly confronted with utter confusion, just frozen. And this dude's just like, "well, see ya" and I have NO FUCKING CLUE WHO HE WAS. It's an interaction that haunts me still.

I would just be like: "... Dude I've never met you before, don't wanna accuse you of being racist, but are you sure you aren't confusing some other Asian dude with me? 🧐"

Like idgaf, I'm gonna make people uncomfortable if they put me in that situation.

That would work both ways.. LadyButterfly gets a warning she is about to run into Frostbeard and thinks "Hell no!" and immediately makes a hard U-turn.

From the other side Frostbears gets a notification that he is about to run into LadyButterfly..and she never shows up.. The ping fading away. He knows then in his heart she is actively avoiding him...

Depending on what high school I was from, a lot of former classmates in my first high school wouldn’t even recognize me since both my name and gender presentation are much different now.

I had to transfer partway into my high school years because the school admins had serious safety concerns for when I leave the property (it was mostly filled with aspiring gangstas, extreme homophobes and few decent people in the mix). Least to say, I was harassed and bullied over my behaviour pre-transition.
