US hikers reported a death. But they imagined it while high on mushrooms

So I'm rappelling down Mount Vesuvius when suddenly I slip, and I start to fall. Just falling, ahh, ahh. I'll never forget the terror. When suddenly I realize, "Holy shit, Hansel, haven't you been smoking peyote for six straight days and couldn't some of this maybe be in your mind?

Aww third guy was camping alone after that
More shrooms for them!

A pair of hikers in New York called emergency services to report that a third member of their group had died, but when a park ranger responded to rescue them it turned out they were just high on hallucinogenic mushrooms, officials say.
The third hiker was uninjured - and not dead - and the hikers were "in an altered mental state", according to a report issued by parks officials.
The incident took place on 24 May on Cascade Mountain in the Adirondacks High Peaks of upstate New York.
The third person also called 911 during the hike, "and was not injured", the report states. They were allowed to continue their camping trip, while the pair were taken to police.
Ego death. It seems the 3rd friend has transcended to a higher plane of consciousness

I'm pretty sure it was not a fun trip for the 2 that thought their friend was dead. The one that was "dead" was probably laughing their ass off.

I'm sure their massively inflated budget can handle it. Presumably the hikers pay their taxes.
They don't have a huge budget. There really aren't that many NYS rangers and they work pretty hard.
In the past they didn't carry guns and focused mostly on search and rescue, appropriate use, etc., but they carry guns now which was not a popular change for a lot of them.

How did I miss that part? That's on me.
Yeah state parks, rangers, and anything that positively manages government land has always gotten the short end of the stick. The state police aren't as militarily kitted out as some local PDs, at least in my experience.
A state park near where I grew up was basically begging for volunteers because they didn't have the budget to take care of the park more than 3ft from the parking lot. (mild exaggeration, but you get the idea)
This whole time I've been thinking its some local city cops with too much time and not enough training...

Negative. We do not want to make people hesitant to call emergency services when necessary. You can disagree with some guy on the internet, but I'm just parroting literally every body of first responders.
Honestly that's a fair take. I think intentions really matter. I'm not sure what the details are in this case so it is hard to know.

Typical trip on psilocybin is going to be 4-6 hours. They had enough time to get lost, think their friend was dead, find apparently some kind of trail guide (which makes me think they were pretty close to civilization) and then wait for the cops. They were probably well on their way to normal by that time.
BUT that being said you make a good point. They sound inexperienced, possibly very young. I'm just saying the police are the wrong guys for the job. I bet the trail guide could have had a lot more fun than their regular shift trip sitting these yahoos.
And you nailed the point we're all inadvertently arguing about: Cops should not be responding to bullshit like this.
Guess my country.

Still beats what happened to my coworker a little over a year ago. He did LSD with a friend, and the friend murdered him. It was pretty crazy to find out about.
Sounds like a bs story
