    Original question by @[email protected]

a lot of people here in the united states find it attractive to have a foreign accent (although depending on what it is they could hate it too). what about your country?

does it depend? what accents don't they like if it depends?

I don't see many foreign people speaking my language at all. Other than the fact that when they do it they're usually either advanced speakers or not at all. I also tend to switch to their language automatically.

Anyone judging anyone else making the effort to speak their language can fuck off. It takes a lot of time and effort to learn a language let alone embed yourself into another culture .

Came here to say this. Western European accents are fun, quirky things. Accents from what our President would call "shithole countries" do not get the same respect.

Typically Arabs would be very impressed to see you even try to speak Arabic. I have never seen someone make fun of a foreigner for their accent. It's also quite rare for a foreigner to speak without accent.

I always love the russian accent for some reason. Like they sound to.. idk how to describe... like very authoritative, it can sound intimidating, but when spoken by someone that is resisting government oppression kinda like bring you hope. Like I hear a Russian accent of English and I immediately think of like revolution, like the revolution against the Tsar, or like the Alexey Navalney type of people.

When ever I hear Chinese, Korean, or Japanese accents, I think of like intellectuals, scientists. And specifically in case of Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin) accents, I think of the fight for democracy in Hong Kong, the resistance against the CCP's encroching upon ROC/Taiwan, and those doctors who tried to warn people of covid, and the dissidents who fled or have been exiled.

The average American English accent sounds kinda boring, no offense. Even the British accept, which is slightly better than the American version, still sounds boring AF.

If the person in question doesn't hate foreigners in general, an accent is mostly adored. Plus, the US is so big, you can have a completely different accent while not being a foreigner. New Yorkers sound way different from Californians. Someone from Arizona is gonna sound a lot different than someone from Minnesota. Etc.

I'm guessing ICE likes it, it probably makes their job easier.

Fun Fact: Did you know that like 30% of ICE agents are Hispanic/Latino Americans? 🙃

Family reunions must be awkward when your buddies deported your aunt/uncle/grandparent

I don't think any country has 'a view' on the way to speak their language. I mean, would there be a law, some rules and sanctions against accents?

People may have their own opinion on the matter but that opinion will vary widely from one person to the other.

My opinion, which was already mentioned in another comment, is that anyone making fun on someone speaking a foreign language can (and should) go funk themselves.

We should welcome those kind of efforts instead of mocking them, and we should also be happy to be encouraged to speak more foreign languages ourselves. I say that as I a French that's poorly speaking a few languages and would love to speak a lot more.

Learning our language is admirable, especially because of a loud minority who never did despite living here for decades.

While some accents are more easy to tell apart and imitate (Georgian comes to mind) nobody will react negatively to hearing it.

In Lithuania at least my area if you speak it with a foreign accent you are still learning and by accent I mean misspelling every second vowel if you can spell correctly you do not have a foreign accent.
