It's crazy how little do we know about the history of the internet. And it all happened just a moment ago! Imagine how many things did we miss about the WWII or the dark ages. Was D-day a dick joke? Were kings and knights cosplyaing? Was holocaust just a prank, bro? We will never know.

          So you're saying that:

          1. some artists created these art pieces
          2. they were randomly hung up next to each other in an art gallery
          3. this became a meme
          4. somebody went and found a screenshot of a 2011 TV show AND a 2018 tumblr post that matched it
          5. that became a meme so popular that everybody forgot about the original and not even knowyourmeme remembers
          6. You, our savior, are here to remind us of the true origin of this meme

          Here's a more plausible explanation:

          1. The art looks rather AI-generated in HD
          2. The photo isn't from an art gallery but just somebody's house, see link above where you can literally order these as decoration
          3. You forgot to fact-check before posting

This interpretation of the meme doesn't exactly predate genAI, but it does predate genAI becoming good enough to do this. We did have some weird stuff that google was messing with back then that was vaguely similar, but I don't think we even called it AI at the time. It mostly made things that looked like LSD hallucinations.

I bought a copy on etsy for someone shortly after pandemic lockdown back in 2020. It's been awhile, but seem to remember the artist having several more meme interpretations in a similar style. Is still almost definitely just from someones house.

The "Will Smith eating spaghetti" video haunts my nightmares. Not going to link it, thinking about it is bad enough.

Maybe you should do a little fact checking: nobody can afford their own house anymore. You're whole explanation falls apart and OP's seem much more plausible again
