Emojis and Lemmy

What emoji are those letters? I can't find them on Gboard at least.
wrote last edited by [email protected]They are regional indicators, groups (usually pairs) form the flags, which are in fact multiple characters but behave like a single glyph in a text editor. You can input them and other Unicode "fonts" using the Irregular Expressions keyboard. Their rendering differs wildly but they are usually small caps, sometimes in boxes (dotted or blue) or bold/filled blue themselves.
For people using Lemmy clients that only show usernames, @[email protected]'s display name is "🇰
🇱 🇦 🇳 🇦 🇰 🇮". Without spaces nor zero-width non-joiners, the name becomes "🇰
" (LAos, NAmibia, KIribati) - you can copy the name into an editor, delete the spaces yourself and see the flags appear. I'd be really surprised if any automatically inserted ZWNJs.

The stupid Facebook posts with an over sized
about a mild joke.
Well yeah, overreacting is pretty cringe-inducing, I agree. But not the use of emoji as a concept, IMO. I think conveying emotion or intent or tone using them is good for communication in general. Makes things more personal and clear.

On Windows, it's Windows key + .
On Linux, there's an app called Characters to copy paste emojis from, and some apps use custom key combinations such as Super + ;, or Fn + ;, or something like that
It's windows + : for me?

Why are Lemmy posts and replies (almost?) emoji free? - I like the small emotion symbols, they add a softer human feel to things :]
wrote last edited by [email protected]I actually prefer emoji-lite conversation, meaning emoji is there to enhance the comment/text, and not mere spamming of one. Like for example
"i don't think i can do that
" kinda feels lighthearted with the emoji than without it. But "i don't think i can do that
" is just pure obnoxious, to me at least. I'm not gonna chastise anyone for doing that of course.
Also i do prefer kaomoji more ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Emojis are for the girls and the homies. Sorry, I don’t know y’all like that.

It's kind of funny how I was recently thinking that Lemmy and other Fediverse services seem to be at least tolerant of occasional emoji use. Just don't overdo it and you'll probably be fine.
Compared to, say, Reddit. If you used emoji there, you either got murdered by the spam filter and you will never succeed in your life and you don't know why (there are other ways to trigger it, of course), or it goes through, and the fedoras shall descend upon you.
I was going to say, I think it's carry-over from Reddit, which is vehemently anti-emoji.
I think they are fine, even helpful, punctuating a larger comment, but I think the fear is tolerance leads to posts that just consist of
👍
or🤣🤣🤣
which are ambiguous (is that agreement or mockery?) and just trash quality content that contributes nothing to the discourse. -

Where do you get your kaomoji?

Reddit hivemind deep rooted into our brains

Why a boomer of all things? O.O
"Boomer" has become a general insult for "out of touch"
-
Because my millennial ass still uses emoticons :l
Stay true, sister

That made me realise of one thing, if I'm on PC I have no idea how to write an emoji. I don't even know if they're available, I imagine they are, but not a clue of how.
I think this is probably a big part of it actually. If you're inserting emojis you're probably on a phone, so you're probably interacting with the discussion in a quite different way than if you were on a PC. It's not as comfortable to write longer, better-thought-out comments.
People pick up on these implications and judge people accordingly.

Where do you get your kaomoji?
wrote last edited by [email protected]No specific site, i just search kaomoji and then copy those i like, then on swiftkey i pin those copied kaomoji on the clipboard so it's saved. Sometime i create one that i can't find on those site, like this one
¯\_( ´ _ `)_/¯It sort of have different feel as this shrug commonly found

Haha I see. I do the same but I steal from my friend and pin them to my HeliBoard.

That's like greeting a toddler and asking parents why she's lice-free.

It's "boomer" to use emoji? The fuck?
Emoji were democratized to unhipness, there was a movie about it and all

wrote last edited by [email protected]Correct usage is "everyone older than the speaker"

My whole name is emojis.

Mine too, but only because I saw your username two years ago and cribbed your trick.

wrote last edited by [email protected]I use them almost exclusively as reactions or to convey tone — and even then, the music notes get used most often, to indicate singing
since lemmy lacks reactions (beyond voting), I rarely have cause

I don't use emoji because they're hip, I use them because they have a function. 🤨
