I am surprised about how many people prefer self checkout. Since AI is taboo to use but replacing a worker with self checkout is okay. Kind of a weird dynamic on the platform.

I AM the human cashier when I do self-checkout. People don't care WHO or what does it, they themselves just don't want to.

Uhh yeah there's a camera there now, and literally my local grocery store of choice, Food Lion, fucking shows you your ass on its display screen. Which is basically saying "Fucking do it mother fucker, we dare you, we double dog dare you."
You could probably do it if you never plan on entering that store ever again.

Most produce has a sticker with the code on it and most stores have now made it to where you can just scan the little sticker barcode anyways.
Yeah... Or if not, just ring it up as the cheaper version of the same (or similar) vegetable. Pro-tip.

The Walmart ones apparently have some manner of AI/neural net/deep learning image processing going on to attempt to catch people stealing stuff at the checkouts.
Somehow they still don't support contactless payments for some reason, though, so that's neat.

We had those handheld scanner at the store I usually go, but they removed them as the theft rate was supposedly higher.
Can't have nice things..
Here you need to use your receipt to get out, and there's (pretty infrequent) checks. Like once every 10th time they'll randomly scan five items

Countries I have visited, I never see a self checkout. Not sure if that is the norm.

When tap-to-pay became a thing, Walmart went all in on building their own payment system instead, because Apple Pay and Google Pay both get a portion of the credit card transaction fees.
By pushing everyone through Walmart Pay, THEY get that portion, and can collect interest on any cash back stored in the customers account (just like Starbucks).
Of course, anyone who just wants to use the nfc on their credit card gets fucked over

wrote last edited by [email protected]Too bad, most larger stores here have them, I love it. Shopping is so quick this way, every thing is already in the bag when you leave, and you just tap your card to pay, and leave by scanning a barcode on your receipt.

I used to work service, and having people to talk to generally made the day much better. I definitely had favorite customers, and what do you know, it was typically people who were social.
I currently work in retail, please just tell me what you want, pay for it, and GTFO. I have significantly more important tasks to do than chit chat.

I'm with him, though, every few months the anti-self-checkout crowd is all up in arms
I somehow don't remember the anti-ATM machine crowd angry about putting tellers out of work or the anti-microwave crowd putting restaurant workers out of work, or the anti-car crowd upset about putting trolley drivers out of work
Maybe you should speculate less and actually read some history?

I went to the US for a few days. Their self checkouts seem to be universally awful, compared to the UK or German equivalent.
While the hardware is far less reliable, and more convoluted, it's the users that seem the main issue. Self checkout is generally intended (over here) to shift the fast, small shops out of the main queues. 1 big line and a dozen or more tills. In the states they treat it as just another till. Built for trollies, and 1 queue per till. Combined with a slow user and it becomes hell rapidly.

THIS is why I hate selfcheckout, it WILL be used to fire all retail checkout workers IRRESPECTIVE of whether self checkout is actually more efficient and useful as a full replacement.
Meanwhile introverts celebrate self checkout here in the US with a shallow understanding of the process of extreme enshittification that is happening that is functionally irreversible especially in a country as broken as the US.
