A Syrian refugee who fled to the Netherlands has reportedly confessed to murdering his 18-year-old daughter and dumping her body in a canal before fleeing the country in an apparent admission note sent to a Dutch newspaper.

Father-of-nine Khaled al-Najjar, 52, wrote in an email sent to De Telegraaf that he had killed his 18-year-old daughter Ryan al-Najjar, urging the publication to report 'I am the one who killed'.

The confession did not specify exactly why he had decided to murder his daughter, with al-Najjar writing only that he was 'very angry with her', adding: 'The reason is between me and the judge. I will read that in court'.

But neighbours and friends suspect Ryan's death came as the result of an honour killing, with one claiming they had previously sheltered her when she had fled the family home in fear of retribution from her father.

Requesting anonymity to prevent any backlash, they told De Telegraaf that Ryan had a Dutch boyfriend, wanted to stop wearing a headscarf and had been beaten by her father who disagreed with her adoption of a Western lifestyle.

      Paradox of tolerance

The paradox of tolerance is a philosophical concept suggesting that if a society extends tolerance to those who are intolerant, it risks enabling the eventual dominance of intolerance; thereby undermining the very principle of tolerance.

            There is no paradox.

            Tolerance is a social contract.

If you abide by the terms of the contract (e.g. tolerance) then the contract applies to you and you are protected by it.

If you do not abide by the terms of the contract then it is broken, and you are not protected by the contract.

Can a capital crime be tried in another country, or would this just be an 'honour hearing'?

"Tolerance" would indicate, that the man is not prosecuted or receives a lighter sentence.
This is not the case. These actions were explicitly NOT tolerated.

I suspect that latent (or open) Islamophobia was part of your motiv when posting this. I would be happy to be wrong.

All kinds of inner family femicide killings happen every day because some man can't deal with their gf not being property.

There's one implied part to tolerating all, which really shouldn't be needed to be spelled out, but somehow it does.

By being intolerant one plays themselves out of the game. Intolerance doesn't have to be tolerated. I wouldnt piss on this pos if he was on fire.

I think you meant inter-family, but the actual proper term would be intra-family as in within the family unit

Just yesterday I joined a Discord server and one of the rules is:

II. There Will Be No Tolerance For Intolerance

SKG enforces a zero-tolerance policy towards hate speech or discriminatory behavior based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or any other protected characteristic. Any use of slurs or language intended to demean or dehumanize an individual or group is prohibited. Violation of this rule may result in immediate removal from the server.

I thought "no tolerance for intolerance" is kinda funny, especially when phrased that way, but obviously I think the policy is good. Just an amusing little oxymoron.

Sorry for going 100% off topic but since it came up, please everyone in the European Union go and sign the Stop Killing Games initiative: https://www.stopkillinggames.com/ the deadline is coming up and the goal is to reach at least 1,500,000 signatures! It's looking like it's doable, every signature counts!

Largely depends on the country. Most countries prosecute only crimes commited in their territory (including ships/planes in/above international waters sailing/flying under their flag) or sometimes even by their citizens outside it. There are always exceptions to these rules. As per the meme, think of them more as guidelines that are followed most of the time.

That being said, this example is within the EU, meaning other EU members are obliged to arrest the person and send then to the country that asked for them. There are also various other extradition treaties under which the person can be brought before Dutch courts.

Also, AFAIK 'capital' crimes in US lingo are those punishable by death. Since no EU members and only one country in Europe outside it actively retains death as a valid penalty for a crime, this would be closer to a felony in the US. The EU is similar to the US in that regard - EU member states are obliged just like US states to turn over people with a properly published arrest warrant. However, there are no "federal" courts in the EU and "federal" crimes like in the US, at least not in the way as they exist in the US.

I'm not in a position to deep-dive into whether this specific story is true or not, but here is some information that I think is important for readers to know:

If you're not from the UK then you might not know about Daily Mail news. This is a far right "news source" that has very poor journalistic integrity and often makes shit up. They have a very strong "anti-foreigner" agenda and heavily embellish or make up stuff to stoke up sentiment about "backward savages foreigners". They are not a reliable news source at all. Wikipedia does not accept Daily Mail as a source.

Personally: if I see a Daily Mail source, I wouldn't bother reading the story at all as the "news" will be of less value than used toilet paper. These turds thrive on writing rage-bait which then circulates on social media (this story currently has a higher upvote score than any BBC, Guardian, etc sourced news recently posted to this community).

Can a capital crime be tried in another country, or would this just be an 'honour hearing'?

I guess each country might have its own laws about this. Many countries have agreements (I forgot the term for this) where they would send each other's wanted criminals back so they can be tried where they committed the crime.

"Tolerance" would indicate, that the man is not prosecuted or receives a lighter sentence.
This is not the case. These actions were explicitly NOT tolerated.

I suspect that latent (or open) Islamophobia was part of your motiv when posting this. I would be happy to be wrong.

Tolerance would indicate that we do nothing about the larger pattern. Honour killings are on one hand part of a larger patriarchal culture that is prevalent in most of the world, on the other hand, they are much more common in groups practicing fundamental variations of Islam. Pointing that out isn't Islamophobia. Blaming each and every Muslim for this would be.
If we persecute each murder committed by policemen, but do nothing against the larger pattern, then we tolerate police violence.

If we would not persecute them or give them lighter sentences, we do not only tolerate them, we endorse them.

Why are people listening to a bunch of lying racists?

Surely if this is a rare chance of Daily Mail reporting accurately, a trustworthy source would have also covered it...

Fair but other sources also cover it:

People from some cultures (typically those where Islam is dominant, but not exclusively) are more prone to behavior like this. Probably due to a system of values they have adopted in their environment and upbringing.
Call it Islamophobia or something else it does lend itself to the idea that some people should be regarded with more default suspicion than others, based on their origins. As long as each individual is treated as just that - individual, and not blamed for the crimes of others, a higher base level of suspicion is unfortunate but a normal human reaction that shouldn't be treated as some kind of horrible sin.
