The Race confirms Verstappen-Mercedes talks – with the possibility of a 2027 seat after a sabbatical

While there is no doubt that Mercedes and Max Verstappen's representatives have held talks in recent weeks about a potential future Formula 1 tie-up, what is less clear is the end game at play from both sides.
The cynics would suggest Mercedes can drive down George Russell's pay demands if he knows someone else is sniffing around his seat, while the Verstappen camp can push up what Red Bull will put on the table to keep its number one on board if it gets to the point where they need to renegotiate a contract for fear of losing him.

"Many stories and rumors are circulating again about Max Verstappen and Mercedes. The interest from Mercedes is there, and that is also known, but according to my information, there is no official offer, and Verstappen has therefore not said 'yes.' "
He added: “We’ll probably know within the next month or so. Nothing definitive yet”

The schedule in F1 is great for fans who want to watch races but otherwise sucks for most of the people who make all the events possible, drivers included.
I wonder if his recent test drive was any indication of what he might want to do in his "spare time" during any potential F1 hiatus... Fun to think about while we wait to see what happens.
